China wanted them to export products out in part of the agreement to allow them to do business in China. So GM decided to exportthe China built 3.4L engines, and they chose the Theta platform to get them. The deals and situation are more complicated than that, but in essence GM had to export something, and when they chose the engine they had to chose a destination.

Furthermore the 3400 turns out to be a pretty decent motor, and the Torrent a pretty decent Vehicle....Just the salesman's two cents....
