The 5L40E is used by both General motors and BMW.
Many of the Z4's with automatic have this transmission and are likely to use the stepmatic function.
The cadillac CTS also has a stepmatic shifter for this transmission.
Some of GM's austrailian cars using this transmission do have paddle shifters...
Based on what I have read the controller of the transmission only needs the appropriate wiring harness and shifter.
The transmission can be operated as a manumatic, as a stepmatic, and also has a sport mode (whatever that is).
All it would take is someone with too much money and time on their hands to figure it all out...
