Everything is relative, of course. I've never done this, so I can't really say what the actual drop in performance would be. But it shouldn't harm the engine, throw a code, or put you into limp mode.

Perhaps mcurrier can tell us if he noticed any considerable drop in performance after he filled up with 87.
