That would be the first indication. But it won't necessarily happen on the drive home. And may never be noticed. As long as additive laced fluid was between teh linings and teh complete pack wasn't replaced the diff might chatter a little but probably would not blow up under normal driving conditions.
Now it is something that informed owners are armed with, the information that there is no automatic fluid change - and that less than initial ratio of additive to fluid is acceptable.
