I removed mine (just gently pried off with a small screwdriver, if I recall correctly).

Putting them back on is fairly easy. You _do_ need to be sure to let the paint cure and then be careful not to scratch the paint re-installing. I took mine off and put them on 2-3 times _before_ I painted, just to make sure I knew what I was doing.
