If you are to purchase a power adder like a NOS, TC, SC, Cams, Computer Tune, etc... You better educate yourself before you jump.
You need to understand the basics like air/fuel ratios, exhaust gas temps, vacuum/boost, oil systems and how they will work with your supercharger/turbo. You'll need to know how your tranny will hold up and what clutch you'll eventually need. You'll need a scanner to check trouble codes and monitor engine readings like knock retard, etc... For forced induction, you'll at least need a boost gauage and a wide band O2 guage.
Most important of all you need to have tuning lined up in advance.. It is best to have a local dyno and tuning shop do a custom tune. If a local soultion is not available then you better have a very moderate mail-order tune ready to go. Talk to your tuner and make sure they are familiar with the software associated with your specific engine and vehicle.
Lastly, your engine is going to wear itself out that much quicker with that much more power. A 2.4L running 400 horsepower will only last 30-40,000 miles at the most. Make sure you have a spare motor accessable, I would just plan ahead and start saving for a nice built engine that you'll eventually need.
Do not ever fool yourself into thinking that just because you have as much horsepower as a Corvette you'll have the same reliability and service costs. It costs $$$ to play.
Here's a list of what I've broken first hand with F.I.:
(2) Blown Rear Ends -'02 SS Camaro
(1) Clutch -'02 SS Camaro
(1) Blown Tranny -LS2 GTO
(1) Broken Tail Shaft -LS2 GTO
(2) Fried Computers (Thanks Diablo) LS1 & LS2 GTOs
(8) Broken Axle Shafts GTOs, Corvettes, CTS-Vs
(1) Blown Motor 6.0l Denali
(3) Piston Failure, Dodge Hemi, Viper SRT10,
(2) Fuel Pumps, C5 Corvette
(1) Blown Motor Mustang GT
None of the above failures were caused by incorrect tuning or incorrect installation of a "turbo kit". Essentially the OEM parts exceeded their design tolerances. I'm sure Bill has a list much much longer with 20 years of experience.
