Guide to Group Runs

I took a guide I got at work for motorcycles and modified it a little. Anything that is left out or needs modified? Use it if it works for you.

Guide to Group Runs

Sol or Sky driving is primarily a solo activity, but for many, running as a group -- whether with friends on a Saturday afternoon drive or with an organized Sol\Sky rally -- is the epitome of the top-down experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group run:

Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank.

Hold a drivers’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and radio channel or phone numbers. Assign a lead and sweep (tail) driver. Both should have experience with group runs and who are well-versed in group running procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s driving skills and the group’s driving style.

Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally seven to twelve cars. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep driver.

Drive prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.

Drive wisely. Allow a proper space cushion between cars so that each driver has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader sets the pace based on groups skill and road conditions. A single-file formation is preferred, if you need to pass do it quickly and get back into line. Give extra room to the car in front of you on curvy roads or when driving conditions dictate (could be weather related or gravel\sand on the road).

Periodically check the drivers following in your rear view mirror. If you see a driver falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the drivers in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to run too fast to catch up.
If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or drive beyond your skills to catch up.

For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone or On-Star to call for assistance as the situation warrants, either from the group, roadside assistance, or 911.

Most of all, have a safe run and come back with no dents, dins, scratches, or bruises.
