Actually by removing the turbulent air from under the car with a splitter does more to reduce drag then the harm it may cause from protruding from the car, canards will add turbulence but once again its purpose is to control air turbulence along the side of the car and move it away from the rolling tires, once again reducing overall drag at speed.
Once a car is properly set up with ground effects, and you learn to use them properly i.e. the faster you drive it the better it holds the road, it's an amazing thing. The convertible top and flying buttress design does more to harm the aerodynamics then anything.
