The "camper tape" worked just as I had hoped, but the sticky stuff was a pain to remove afterward. I would only suggest using it if you were putting the rack on for an extended period of time, say a month or more.

I still get very faint marks that appear to be the result of the outer vertical edge of the rubber backing on the metal straps. This is mostly in the area where the "twist" between the forward and aft straps occurs. I'm looking for a solution to this as well as a way to make the entire rack easier to install and remove.
