Does it matter which position of the wire I connect them to. Basically I have tried connecting them after they split off and before. It shouldn't matter where in the line you splice it (current doesn't care) and the blue and black wire should be the right ones. I spliced in right behind the bulb plug for the signals. Are the two wires for the LED's both copper or is one silver? If there is a built in resister in the LED the current will only flow in one direction so it may be wired backwards. You asked about a coating on the wire. Does one of them have like a red tint to it? If it does then it is coated and you'll need to melt that off with a lighter before you connect it or it won't work.
