Cool New Garmin Capability previewed at SEMA

Check out this upcoming capability from Garmin, which was displayed at SEMA this year. I can see this being a huge seller.

Garmin communicates with your car via ESP | SEMA show - CNET Reviews

Quote:
We stopped by Garmin's booth at the 2009 SEMA Show expecting a new GPS device or news of another OEM integration deal, but we stumbled upon something even better. Sometime next year, Garmin's Nuvi GPS devices will gain the ability to communicate with your car through ESP. In this case, we're not talking about psychic extra-sensory perception, but the EcoRoutes ESP module for Nuvi navigation devices.

The ESP module is a small hideaway box that communicates with Nuvi units via Bluetooth.

The ESP module is a hideaway box that connects to (and is powered by) your vehicle's OBD-II diagnostics port. The device gathers information about your vehicle's performance and relays that info via a Bluetooth data connection to your Garmin Nuvi GPS device atop your dashboard.

Using the Nuvi's touch screen, users can view a set of customizable gauges, view and clear fault codes when the Check Engine light comes on, and monitor real-time fuel economy and emissions data. The unit also provides data logging for users who want to track their performance and interfaces with the EcoRoutes software that's already present on current Garmin devices.

Garmin's representatives were happy to give us a quick demo of the system in action at their booth on the show floor and it looks pretty slick. Pricing and availability were unavailable at the time of publication, but we're told to expect more information at CES in January 2010, so stay tuned.

GM To Keep Opel, Sale To Magna Off

By Nelson Ireson

November 3rd, 2009

Late last month reports emerged that GM's sale of Opel to a consortium of buyers led by Magna International and Russia's Sberbank could be done as early within weeks. Since then, the deal hasn't quite come to completion, undergoing scrutiny from the EU for fairness in the bidding process. Today, GM made all the hubbub around the Opel sale meaningless by announcing it has decided to keep the brand. GM CEO Fritz Henderson summed up the decision succinctly: "This was deemed to be the most stable and least costly approach for securing Opel/Vauxhall’s long-term future." He also acknowledged that the whole ordeal has been "draining" for all involved, but was unapologetic about the sale reversal. The drama isn't over, however, as the economic situation in Europe, especially for the car industry, is still touch-and-go. Quick action to restructure Opel/Vauxhall's operations and investment in the company by EU governments will be necessary to pull the company through according to the new plan. The delay that preceded the switcheroo was rooted in EU concern for the bidding process and its fairness. According to a late October posting to GM's FastLane blog by John Smith, GM Group Vice President, Corporate Planning and Alliances, "Last week, the Directorate-General for Competition expressed concerns about possible limitations on the availability of government financing for all Opel bidders, and how that may have influenced the selection process. "The German Government was asked by DG Competition to communicate its position on financing availability to GM and the Opel Trust Board who, in turn, were requested to consider the recommended bidder for Opel accordingly." Negotiation of the finer details was ongoing for about a month, though the agreement did make clear the general shape of the deal: GM would have retained 35% of Opel, with 10% reserved for Opel employees, and the Magna-Sberbank group would have taken the remaining 55%. Perhaps most telling in the whole deal, GM still has plans for the brand's cars here in the U.S. Although Saturn was previously the primary outlet for re-badged Opels in America, Buick recently confirmed a redesigned Insignia to be sold as the Regal.

2009 SEMA Show Coverage
Nov 04, 2009 - 4:58 PM - by Administrator

Held each year in Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA Show is an industry event for the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association.

Tuners and parts suppliers from across the industry and even from the realm of motorsports come to show off their wares, usually displayed on some sort of eye-catching highly-modified vehicle - be it a muscle car, hot rod or sport compact car.

And let's not forget the increasing presence of mainstream manufacturers like Hyundai, Scion, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Chrysler and Dodge. Major areas of interest at SEMA include Racing and Performance, Wheels and Tires, as well as Trucks, SUVs and Off-Road vehicles.
