I just had a revelation while looking at the solstice in the garage...

Remember the Solstice with the turn signals in the little vents on the side of the car that Norm made deeper for that guy?

Well what I am thinking is get a double din dvd stereo that this will work with and then adding a camera to each of those vents in the deeper custom fenders norm made and wiring it so that when you turn your blinker on, they would automatically turn on like on a motorhome and display on your dvd player?

Anyone think this is a cool idea? You could also have the rear bumper camera turn on when put in reverse..

I think it would be neat.. what are your opinions.

Porsche Boxster - Still not convinced

I'm at work and bored, waiting for Friday evening to roll along. So I did a google search on 1997-2004 Boxster reviews (Closed match to my 2008 GXP).

I found it interesting, some of the gripes are the same as we've seen the media speak of about out cars. But overall, I'm not convinced. At one time I wanted a Boxster (prestige, styling, quickness)... this review just confirms I made the right choice when I got my GXP:

Something I personally found funny since it is a common gripe from Solstice owners:

*"...though paint was gorgeous and panel fits precise--a sharp contrast to the thin, cheap-looking black plastic used on the dashboard and console."*

Excerpt:

Consumer Guide® Road-Test Evaluation
Looks are just the starting point of the Boxster's appeal. It may be the latest "budget" Porsche, but the Boxster is no less a thoroughbred sports car than its big-brother 911. This roadster entertains most on twisty roads, tracking with grippy sure-footed stability, little body lean, and sure control, aided by rifle-quick steering with ample feedback. Unfortunately, the penalty for this handling prowess is an annoyingly stiff ride, with constant minor pitching on some freeways, and lots of thumpy jiggle over tar strips and patches. Add in marked noise from engine, wind, and tires, and the Boxster would be wearing on a long Interstate trip. Although the engine is strongest at higher rpm, there's enough low-end torque for punchy standing starts and quick passing sprints. Still, our manual-shift test car disappointed slightly in the 0-60 mph test at 7.5 seconds (Porsche claims 6.7). Fuel economy is excellent for the performance, however. We averaged a laudable 21.7 mpg in spirited city/highway driving. "Panic" braking is arresting-cable swift. Mash the pedal and the Boxster just hunkers down and stops. Some drivers feel cramped in a Boxster, even with the top down, while others have no complaints. Audio and climate controls are handy but confusing. Many drivers would prefer a tilt steering wheel instead of the standard telescopic adjustment. As it is, the wheel rim tends to mask part of the tachometer face. Additional gripes: an old-fashioned floor-hinged gas pedal; analog and digital speedometers; no in-dash glovebox; and no top-side engine access other than three "service" ports in the rear trunk. On the plus side, the Boxster's two cargo holds (front and rear) take a fair bit of stuff for a 2-seater, the seats are supportively comfortable, and visibility is okay despite a "bathtub" driving position and the soft top's fairly blind rear quarters. That top works quickly and seals well, but isn't completely covered when folded under its lid. Also, the plastic rear window seems cheap at this price. The optional behind-the-seats wind blocker is effective, but cumbersome to remove or install. Boxster is solid and rattle-free for a modern ragtop. One test car had some body shake over railroad tracks, though paint was gorgeous and panel fits precise--a sharp contrast to the thin, cheap-looking black plastic used on the dashboard and console.

Just curious folks, maybe this happened to you. But I was replacing the rubber connector on my Dejon IC pipes, and noticed I had scrapped the powder coating off with my finger nails. NO they are not that long or that sharp :banghead:

But, I thought powder coating was tougher than that? Has anyone had this experience?

So I was test driving a Solstice, because I've been looking for one... and the only problem I noticed was that the left front fender was popped out / misaligned about 1/2 inch where it meets the door.

It looked like crap, and I wondered if there was an accident... then I heard that the front fenders need to come off for maintenance, etc.

Is this normal? Is this something I can fix? Or, for that matter, is this something they would fix under warranty?

Thanks.

This morning while scrolling through the DIC the engine temperature showed ---F°. There was no idiot light and the car was running fine. Just to be safe I pulled over and noticed nothing wrong (leaks, steam, coolant level, etc). I'm thinking that this is a temperature sensor malfunction to the DIC, but that the computer is still receiving a valid temperature since the car runs fine. Can this be verified on the OBD? If this is a temp sensor is it easy to replace? Any other thoughts?

I have a new set of front fender liners with the updated mounting hardware
for sale. I am asking $50. You have to be able to pick them up from me as
shipping costs are cost prohibitive. UPS wanted more to ship them than what
they cost from Pontiac. They only fit the GXP models.

If interested, email me at: mrgibmckain@comcast.net

For those of you that live in squirrel country, and don't/can't keep your car in an enclosed garage, here's a warning. I just paid my dealer $380 to repair the wires to my #2 injector, because a squirrel decided under my engine cover would be a good place to pile his acorns and nibble on wires. I normally keep my car in the garage, but I'm working on my motorcycles, and it's too small for both. Oh, and chasing them away once won't work, 'cause once they've chosen a spot, they'll keep coming back. I plan to put a tray of rat poison under there every day, until I can move back into the garage.

Hello,

Am I the only one that gets fingerprints all over my Solstice when closing the trunk lid.. or am I doing something wrong?

Do they make a closer for the trunk so you dont have to touch it.. I hate cleaning it up going out for a drive.. picking up some stuff and then getting finger prints on my Sol...

How do you close your lid? Is yours kinda hard to close? :lurk:

Zed Amplifier group purchase

I am fronting a "group purchase" for Zed Amplifiers. Zed did *NOT* approach me to do this, I asked THEM if they'd extend the offer. This thread has been approved by the moderators of this board.

*Why Zed:*
Because these amps are awesome, and offer the flexibility and package to work great as a single-source amp for the Kappa. Designed, made, and SUPPORTED in America. Read the specs. Read about the man that makes them.
I spoken at length directly with Steve and he is a great guy - he really welcomes interaction and if you have ANY questions please contact him directly via email or by phone.
Monday-Thursday (Yes they work a 4 day week) at (805)-526-5315 PST
FAX at (805)-526-8572
E-Mail us at Zedaudio@aol.com

Zed Audio Corporation
743 Cochran Street
Suites D
Simi Valley, CA 93065

And - *THEY RUN EXTREMELY COOL*!

To be clear: this is a lot of amp and it's a lot of money, and it's not going to be for everyone.

*How much:*
The 2-channel _Kronos_ is $429 list
Untitled Document (http://www.zedaudiocorp.com/Products/KRONOS.htm)
The multi-channel _Leviathan_ is $599 list
Untitled Document (http://www.zedaudiocorp.com/Products/LEVIATHAN.htm)

Please note the current Zed website is being revamped. It is expected that the new website up by the 20th and the content will be more polished and complete.

*What are the terms of the GP?:*
There is a minimum of 4 people for the group pricing.
Every person that joins the group purchase knocks 1% off the cost up to 5 people, at 6 people we get 7.5% off, at 10 people we get 10% off.
More than 10 can participate, but that's the cap on the discount.

Note: between myself and a non-Kappa owner that contacted me via ZED we *already have TWO sold*......

*How do I get in on the deal?:*
You will PM me with your:
* off-site email address
* your desired amplifier
* your ship-to zip code

Once I have the final count of participants we will determine the cost-per-person.
You will the receive an email with your total cost including freight.

These amps are shipped *fully insured*, double boxed in a gift box and encased in memory foam.
Shipping is location dependent and typically between $17 - $27

You will PayPal Zed directly and you will be sent your amp.

Once your PayPal payment is received Zed will issue an invoice with your amplifiers serial number in it.

*This will run from today until December Fifteenth - that's it. You're in or you're out. No long-term tire kicking.*

*FAQ:**
Start Here: ZED AUDIO (http://www.zedaudiocorp.com/)*

1) Do we all need to buy the same amp for the "10 total"
Nope.

2) I want to know..... ?
If it's not addressed in the PDF attached call ZED (Steve) directly and ask!

3) Is this going to fit in location X?
No idea - the dimensions of the amps are:
Size in W x H x L
Kronos - 247mm x 55mm x 272mm (9.7” x 2.1” x 10.7”)
Leviathan - 247mm x 55mm x 410mm (9.7” x 2.1” x 16.1”)

4) What are the specs of these amps? How much XXX do they need? How much XXX do they have? How much XXX do they put out?
See page 15 of the detailed PDF attached - in short, they are pretty awesome.

Seriously - you need to read the attached PDF (http://ocnav.com/cars/Sky/ZedManual-A.pdf) to have an appreciation for these hand-crafted gems.

That's it - I've tried to cover everything, but if you have questions and simply refuse to contact Zed you can ask away here.

Dealer Won't Fix Damaged Bumper

I got my '08 Solstice in September of '08. Within the first few days of purchasing the car, I noticed that the front bumper was a bit out of alignment and that there were scratches on the underside of the bumper, only visible if you actually put your head on the ground and look up at the underside of the bumper.

I hadn't noticed this right away because the bumper is only very slightly out of alignment (the gaps between the bumper and the fenders are a bit too large).

So, my thinking was that somewhere along in the line in the vehicle's 300KM life before I bought it, someone at the dealership or during a test drive cranked the bumper against the ground while unloading the car or driving up to a curb or something. In any case, I know without a doubt that it was not me. I have always been extremely conscientious about the ground clearance of the front bumper and have always known to be very careful when going up inclines, driveways and pulling up to curbs.

I originally called the dealership for a service appointment and described the issue back in December of '08. They scheduled an appointment to bring the car in, but I was unable to make the appointment. Due to a busy life and the fact that the bumper mis-alignment isn't horribly noticeable, and that the dealership is a pain for me to get to, I never got around to bringing it back in, until just now. I brought the car in today and the service guy just left a message on my voice mail saying that they won't fix the bumper under warranty because the mis-alignment is due to "impact damage", or in other words, "we think you broke it".

On one hand, I'm blaming myself for not going over the car with a fine tooth comb before driving it off the lot initially, including checking the underside of the bumper and making sure EVERY square inch of the car was in 100% pristine condition. On the other hand, someone else damaged the bumper either at the dealership or en route to the dealership from the factory.

Does anyone think I have a chance in hell in getting them to fix this or should I just chalk it up as a lesson learned?
