Compression,

I would love for Dave to advise me that he wants to get as much out of the Mitsu as he can - then pull it and install the Garrett he thinks is best for the 2.4 with stock internals to see what it will do.

Then after that dyno, I would love for him to install a set of race cams and try another size Garrett! Of course I'm just wishing now!

I really think you should go with a garrett turbo. It will make more power no question hands down.

Critterman,

I think it would be interesting to see (with the same driver) how much turbo whp it takes to beat the stage II S/C in the 1/8th mile. To eliminate any high rev launch... try a rolling start @ 5mph or something.

I tell you what I'm interesting in seeing - a 2.4 automatic with the stage II S/C. No shifting delay.... just acceleration and let the shifting take care of itself (at around 7k).

Carl,

I do think that would be interesting, but half the race is the launch and reaction time. It would be more scientific with the same drive and identical parameters.

water-cooled, ball-bearings; quick spool for the hoard.

Thanks Carl for the run-down - you definitely have the best looking engine bay on the forum!

So which is the preference -

GT2876R

or

GT3076R

I guess the smallest unit that will produce 300whp would give a quicker spool, right? 311 @ 8lbs boost is great! If there is a limit (safe) boost on stock internals at 12 lbs - and if there is no limit on air volume (is that correct?) then what whp would the Garrett produce @ 12lbs? And, at that point would the 3076 be a better choice?

The GT30 will spool up a bit slower. But it will give you a higher HP over all. I think my GT2876R turbo is rated for 480hp. So it is no where near its limits. Also on 12psi, I have no idea what kind of power your car will make. It all depends on the tuning. Tuning is the main thing on this car. You can run 20psi all day if you have the right tuning. That is why im looking to re tune my car on 9psi or maybe even 10psi just to see this baby move a bit more.

Doesn't the 'tuner' just about have to have your car to be able to properly do the tune (tune the ECM to the turbo?). How far is Piedmont, S.C. from you?

This is why R&T does a 5 mph roll test. Consistency.

Carl, use the Garrett. As one who used to tune a turbo car, I promise you won't be disappointed.

An update from me on the DDM Custom Turbo program (Dave/Randy hope I'm not saying anything I shouldn't)-

After my trip to Piedmont I had to have back surgery done and I gave the boys at DDM another 3 months to play with (can't drive anyway). So I'll be picking the car up in Lexington at the SE Regional meet.

For those going to the meet, my car will be on display with DDM to show the finished product.

Exchanged e-mails with Randy yesterday and here's where we are (other than the fact that DDM has been extremely busy with Pro-Beam sales, Stage II systems upgrades and now working on the automatic transmission stage II S/C, oh yeah - and stage III S/C):

ECM Tuning for the turbo, both stage II and stage III, are complete (with additional tweaking to come for the final stage III).

Stage III fuel delivery system in process and about 50% there.

The Mitsu 16G is being used for development but will be replaced by a Garrett as the final unit.

There will be NO parts held over from the previous turbo system on this car! It is 100% DDM.

Still no word (to me anyway) that DDM will offer upgrades to existing turbo systems or will offer this Custom system to the public. I would suggest that it might be a good thing to wait until after August if you are considering a turbo system for your 2.4 - or if you have a current turbo system and want to think about upgrading to a higher stage level or just improve the one you have. Can't hurt to wait, just in case.

Stay tuned!

This is one of the most anticipated projects on the forum. I would love to fly down and join you guys. Did you get any sneak looks at Patricks auto/sc car Carl? I am still breaking in my clutch, but I got that horrible vibration you guys talk about. I hate it!
Hats off to all of you.

Madmods, hopefully Randy will continue to post pictures and progress of Patrick's auto.

Also, Randy is planning on installing a Spec stage II+ clutch in his car. He's driven mine and knows the harmonic vibration we get. I'll bet he can find a cure for us.
