I took delivery of my GXP after getting about 2/3rd of the way through a frame-off restoration of my '60 Corvette. I agree the styling cues have similarities and I think those similarities may have caused me to first consider the GXP. I agree also about the similarities of the marketing philosophy used with both cars. After looking at my GXP, when they realize its a Pontiac, many folks have said its about time GM made something that is stylish and doesn't look like a box. Hey, the late 50s and the 60s were good times for auto development. We can only hope the GXP is the beginning of a repeat !

Replace "GXP" with "Solstice"... All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.

Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2005 and 1953,
they would cost you $2774 and $398.56 respectively.

Do you want to do another calculation?
From the St.Louis Fed, the 1953 dollar is about 7.4 times the 2006 dollar. Also, the HP numbers are not comparable. In 2006 terms, the 53 Vette was about 75 HP as reflected in the 0-60 time of 12 seconds. Plus, the additional equipment of the Sol makes it a MUCH better value.

Wow... never figured they would be quite so similar.

Very interesting tread, glad someone brought it back out. I like seeing how close it is to the 53/54 Vet. I hope that when my grandson, ( not born yet) has #507 in his garage it is worth what a 53 Vet is today. Thats why I have put together a complete set of GM material on the car. This includes both banners, a second set of litho's and all the sales lit. I have told my dealer as he is cleaning the closets out I will take anything he is going to throw away. Saved even the boxes from the first 1000 gifts. Wife thinks, knows, I am crazy, but hopefully my sons or grandsons, maybe grand daugther, will love it as much as I do.

The first Corvettes to come off the line wouldn't even start. GM overlooked the electrical grounding issue.

So right there, the Sol is about 1,000,000 times better quality. The only real innovation on the '53 Vette was it was the first major US production car to be made of fiberglass- there were European cars that were fiberglass before the 'Vette. The Corvette also would have failed as a vehicle and would be a footnote in automotive history if not for Ford's Thunderbird giving it competition on the showroom floor. The first vettes were also not good sports cars, the Sol is much more competent car all around. Look at the weight distribution on the two cars

well, bear in mind that you are getting 1953 tech for the 1953 money, and 2005 tech for the 2005 money. if all you got for the 2005 money was 1953 tech, then the Sol should be worth about 5K

This is a very interesting thread. I've been on the forum for the better part of two years now and never saw this thread before. It will be very interesting to see how the early Sols will be talked about 10-15 years from now. I am dying to see what the next generation Sols will look like.

This guy put up an adjusted base price chart for Corvette. His comments are below the picture. Interesting stuff!

Corvette Adjusted Base Price Trends:
Price

Quote:
Most Corvette pricing data in this chart is from the Corvette Black Book while CPI data is from Bureau of Labor Statistics and is current as of January, 2005. Options that were mandatory or included on every Corvette (such as the heater and the radio in 1953 or 16-inch wheels and tires in 1984) are considered to be part of the base price.

It is certainly interesting to see three basic phases in Corvette base prices — essentially stable from about 1953 to 1976, a spectacular run-up from about 1977 to 1990 (even when one ignores the stratospheric Callaway and ZR-1 pricing), and essentially stable from about 1991 to present. jjm3

The only reason why we have the Corvette today is because of Zora Arkus Duntov. He stuffed a V8 and a 3-speed manual into the car, making automotive history. That, and Ford released the T-Bird in '55.
