Charity Solstice IV - The Green Monster now BLUE MONSTER

Well, we're back at it and going with a bit of a different setup this time around -- a base model, with an automatic transmission, and a V8 under the hood.

This is the 2007 Canada/North Dakota car that was speculated on here over the past year and it is now safely at J&R Performance in Phoenix, where the work to make it perfect for the next owner has just begun.

The car has an LS2 and an 80LE transmission. Both the engine and tranny are low mile examples and the car itself has only 9,000 miles on it. The car was built in Canada by the previous owner and has a Ken Kelly tune that was tweaked by Tony Duncan who did tuning work on LS motors for Comp Cams.

Car is in great shape with few if any scratches or dings and the interior is perfect.

It was a bit of a stretch buying it unseen from another country, but the owner answered all of my questions, sent videos to me of the motor, etc., and with all the sponsors I have offering parts and labor, it was too good to pass up. (The car is originally a U.S. car, so that made things a little easier as well.)

Here is what is happening:

- Motor is very strong and smooth, but tune needs some tweaking. It idles too high. J&R is working to correct all of that. Shifting is excellent.

- Big radiator and shrouding appear to work well, but need to do more driving in the heat out here to be sure.

- Car has original tires, which are hard as rocks. TSW and Discount Tire already came through on new ones -- same staggered mesh Snettertons in 19x8 and 19x9.5's with 245 and 275 Hankook Ventus V12 tires. Wheel Specialists of Tempe customized the rears to fit perfectly and mounted and balanced for free. This package will go on this coming week. Thanks so much to those three sponsors who have come through again and again!

- Suspension is stock. BC Racing just donated a set of coilovers with custom spring rates for the added weight -- J&R performed a four-corner weighing to be sure the springs were made exactly as needed. Thanks, BC!

- Headers were a JBA set that were doctored to fit and had no cats. We are going back to stock C6 Vette manifolds with cats and they will mate up to a Solo center dual exhaust with Norms rear fascia. Solo has provided parts for the last three charity cars, so I can't thank Jeff enough! And Norm came through with the rear fascia for the second time! Dave at DDM has used the Solo RCD on a V8 car and says it sounds great.

- Depending on what fits with the exhaust setup, we'll eventually add underbody bracing to the package.

- Car had AC from the factory but new lines need to be run to make it work again. We have a sponsor who specializes in custom AC work on hot rods who will get the cabin ice cold again down the road.

- TCE here in Tempe has donated their custom front brake package, with silver calipers. They are ready for pickup. Thanks again, Todd!

- Don at Soundwerks has offered yet another custom setup -- this car has the Monsoon, so we are simply going to put a new, DVD/NAV head unit in the dash and have it custom grafted (no visible trim ring). He will add a reverse camera and steering wheel control modules, etc.

- I liked the carbon fiber look so much on the last car that we will have the dash and interior pieces dipped again by CGS Kustoms in Tempe.

- We'll probably have the seats redone in higher quality leather that will tie in with the steel/sand interior. Palacios Upholstery will do the work on the seats.

- DDM has offered some black Lil Chromies to replace the plastic stockers and has also already given a lot of advice on the build, so thanks, as always to Dave.

- Also, thanks much to Dave at PA who always responds with guidance on these builds (and a bunch of parts!)

- King Penn has already sent us lighted door sill covers and a custom Windrestrictor that will go on toward the end of the build. Thanks Ashli and WR for the support!

- Rolling Arts Motorsports of Scottsdale will do all the touch-ups and detailing as well as painting the front kidneys and Norm's fascia black. They are also painting the windshield surround and double-humps body color green.

- Of course, I will have all the fluids and filters changed, put in a new battery, upgrade the headlight bulbs, wipers, add Lloyd's Mats, etc. The whole idea behind these builds is to make them ready to roll, and far better than new in so many ways.

- Finally, if green is not the preferred color choice of a perspective buyer, I am having a high end wrap sponsor offer a complete wrap in the color of their choice.

- BTW, the Charity Coupe is still for sale. We are not in a big hurry as having the link active has been very helpful while soliciting support on this car. It is still sitting in the showroom at Goldie's Motors, beside a pair of classic Corvettes.

Stay tuned for more info and thanks again to all the vendors who have donated parts and support!

You have someone local working on a Carputing tune? If so do they have a site license? Talk with Robert Ashby and see if they can fix his tune issues. He has a keyed cable and his own license

I have a cable and a license from Ken. My guys have already met with Robert and will lend anything they can to his tune.

I looked at that green monster pretty seriously a while back. Super low miles and a knowledgeable guy who did the build. Nearly bought it, to go with my 4 banger green one. Seemed like a pretty great price.

But then my red one came up, in Western Canada and I jumped on it. Somebody is going to get a nice car. Don't sweat the color. There are lots of greenies out there. I personally love it.

Yes, the car is in excellent shape -- the upgrades mentioned above that have been donated are all things that would make any Solstice better, but this car in particular as there is more than enough power on tap. With the maintenance parts replaced, handling upgraded, paint made like new, and interior freshened, the car will be very nice. And I actually like the green exterior with tan interior and top and mesh/spoke wheels. It's a classic roadster combo. I do look forward to driving it a bit once completed.

The build has begun. I drove the car for the first time and it is really fun. All the potential in the world is there for this to be an incredible car. First things first, we are getting the tune tweaked and Ken Kelly is on board to help my guys at J&R Performance dial it in. At the moment, it is a little rough at cold startup, but settles nicely as it warms. When shifted into Drive, the idle jumps up too high, which will be adjusted. The 80le auto tranny shifts wonderfully and can be further tweaked as they have full access to the TCM.

The car appears to run without the overheating issues most V8's have as it was 95 degrees and the temps stayed at 210 or below.

The tires are original and hard as rocks. The new 19's are mounted and balanced and will be on the car soon. Again, we had the rear 19.5's machined to fit so we can run the 275's in the back. Thanks so much to Wheel Specialists of Tempe and thanks also to TSW Wheels and Discount Tire for donating the roller package.

The front brake kit donated by TCE of Tempe is ready to install as well.

Also, the BC Racing coilovers with custom spring rates set specific to the four-corner weighing J&R did are in the shop and ready to install.

I just ordered a new AC compressor (for an 05 GTO) and that will be installed along with new AC lines.

The car has JBA headers that have seen better days, so we are putting in stock Corvette C6 manifolds and cats, and running them to the Solo center dual exhaust. Thanks again to Jeff at Solo and Norm for the rear fascia! We will paint Norm's piece black as well as the front kidneys.

Of course, we will add a touchscreen A/V unit with reverse cam, new leather on the interior, carbon fiber dipped dash pieces, and touchup/detail to make the car much nicer than new in those categories. We will also install the donated Windrestrictor (says, "SOLSTICE") and lighted door sills.

Working around sponsors' paid jobs always takes time, but we are off and running. See below for a before shot.

AC compressor came in, so that part of the install can begin. (Running new lines will be the toughest part of getting the air going, but we have a new mechanic who has offered to donate the time and parts to do it.)

Joe Cordes of Cordes Performance Racing, who has donated all kinds of work on these cars, called me, offering a very clean set of exhaust manifolds and cats from an '08 Corvette. Only 10,000 miles on them, so should work great and help us with emissions (the car came with no cats at all). I picked them up yesterday and they look perfect. Thanks, Joe!!

The trick will be to get the manifolds and cats to fit, and build custom piping that will run back to the Solo RCD exhaust. We have a custom exhaust shop offering to make it happen. (This will take some R&D, given the big Escalade tranny sitting under there.)

The guys at J&R Performance need to get a couple of customer cars out the door before they can get into the meat of this build. Hoping to see a lot of progress in May and will post photos and updates as things happen.

I dropped off the exhaust manifolds this week and got an update. New wheels and tires are on and look great with the green and tan top -- very classic roadster feel. For the moment, it looks like an off-road vehicle until the guys can put on the donated BC coilovers.

I guess the custom exhaust guy is swamped with jobs and cannot get to the manifolds, cats and custom plumbing to make the Solo RCD fit with all any time soon. These builds do tend to take a long time as donated labor is fit in when convenient, but I totally understand.

I spoke with Ken about a cable and software and he sent a set that arrives today. I had to pony up for them but do not feel comfortable selling this car to someone and not providing them with a cable to tune the V8.

I really want to get the manifolds and cats on and get the car tuned so I can put some key cycles on it and pass emissions (and put the 4PHXKDS). The car came from Canada and had no cats at all.

I am really excited about the car - loving the V8 with an auto, and also liking the base version for a change.

Quick update. Things are at a bit of a standstill as the shop donating the performance work is behind on a couple of customer cars and cannot get back into the charity car for another 2-3 weeks. I have learned that I need to do the work in a certain order, so no interior or paint/detail work will be done until the performance stuff is completed. I have had stereo A/V work completed, and then upholstery shop mess up speaker wires doing door trim, etc. So, we'll wait for the generous shop to have time to get the new exhaust manifolds, cats and Solo RCD's installed, the tune redone, coilovers and brakes installed and a few other goodies taken care of before we move on to interior, stereo, paint and detail. I must say again, a V8 Solstice with an automatic is really fun and eliminated a lot of headaches that come with these swaps.
