Check your lug nuts numnutz!

I took my CF in yesterday morning for an oil change, tire rotation, and state inspection. 1hr later my car is pulled around and off I go (a whopping 300 yards)and blammo Sky on three wheels.

I am not kidding 3 effing wheels. Seems the tech "forgot" to tighten the lug nuts on the front passengers side. I could literally throw a rock and hit the dealership, but unfortunately I was in the left lane of a three lane highway. I called the dealership and told them to look out front at my car

About 3min later the police show up(super nice officer) and about 5min later two Saturn techs show up with 3 jacks and lug nuts just in case. We get the rim and tire back on and go back to the dealership and everyone is in awe of what just happened. Put the sky on the lift and luckily when the rim came off it jammed itself between the rotor and wheel well so the bottom of the car never hit the ground.Whew!! Unfortunately the Front quarter panel between the door and front tire has to be replaced, the door may need replacing not really sure yet, and the tire and rim needs replacing as well.

I was beyond pissed. When the Techs showed up one of them said you didn't happen to see the lug nuts did you? I said dude do I look like I'm in the mood to look for lug nuts?

Then like a calm breeze I realized its just a car and no-one was hurt so get over it. I could have just as easily done this myself, and I should have enough sense to do a proper walk around. So no telling when I'll get my Sky back But just wanted to put the words of wisdom out there Check your lug nuts numnutz.

Incredible! These are paid professionals, they obviously should not forget such an important procedure.

Whatever parts are damaged, you want NEW. You don't need to put up with banging a piece back into shape. Remember, many of these parts are hydro-formed, so you don't want them hammer-adjusted.

My special salute to the NUMNUTZ responsible:

Hummm...
You must be using the same service department I do.
You could try a different one, but I wouldn't hold your breath for better results. All I can say is that I feel your pain. It's quite obvious that this type of thing is never going to end, so you just have to accept it as "part of the deal" when you buy a car and take it in for service.
It's just a crap shoot. You never know what you're going to get...but some crap is worse than others.

I gotta ask since I almost did the same thing at the track once. Put my street tires back on and forgot to torque one wheel. I didn't make it out of the parking lot since I heard a ticking/thunking noise, thought I had broken something and stopped to check "the stupid first" and sure enough.. Its what happens when you share a torque wrench with three other cars..

Sorry just had to ask.. But agree it needs a first class take care of. And don't forget you want all new lugstuds.. I destroyed three for sure but replaced all of them since I didn't want any issues.

Sorry it had to happen.

Inexcusable. Yes, absolutely. But so much the norm- folks not paying attention to what they do

Glad you're OK, sr819!

Now, before I go further, I like GMs. But their service really can be better.

Here's a pic of the multi-point inspection from my last scheduled maintenance. Note how all the checks are similar looking, at the same angle, and the same length. Classic "fill it in later" paperwork evidence

In addition to being pencil-whipped, the tech didn't put in his name, and the VIN of the car is not listed. Is this inspection report even for my car? Who knows. The service manager and I chatted about this and he defended it, saying that quote "well when the tech does this, he's got a good idea in his mind for what he did".

I called baloney and told him to either use the checklist right, or stop using it. Those things exist so that silly errors like lugnuts falling off don;t happen. But it only works if you use the list, either do it or don;t but stop using it wrong, "It's not our checklist" he said "Really? So you're not a GM dealer??" was my reply!

And not signing the checklist...I told him how far that would fly in the shop I used to run, where the US Government was the customer, but not really much of a reaction from him.

The 'new GM' needs to square it's service centers up first...or as I like to think of it, GM needs to un-F itself. Here's the pencil-whipped checklist. Hell, its only my safety and my car, right? Who needs to fill in names or even VINs?

is the "Tell Fritz" website up yet??

I saw the same thing happen at one of the top European brand's dealerships a few years ago. The customer only made it 100 yards before one of his tires stuffed itself into the fenderwell. It was quite a scene and the dealer had to call the police to protect themselves from the customer. It was quite a scene!

My hat's off to sr819 for keeping his cool!

Hubby had tires rotated on a 1963 Chevy Impala many years ago and the front passenger tire came off within a few minutes of leaving the tire store. Needless to say he was VERY UPSET.

There was damage to the fender and rim and the tire store paid for repain to fender and replacement of the rim without thinking twice. Needlessto say, this can happen to anyone but doesn't it just send ya into a rage?
