I know I know....but 25 words or less just doesnt work with me.
OK...I started a thread a while back, asking what I should say on the service survey from GM (If I ever get one).
Here's what I've been through with my FANTASTIC GM service department.
Got the Solstice...first thing was a rattle in the instrument cluster and a misalligned trunk. They fixed the rattle but couldnt "SEE" that one side of the trunk sits lower than the other.
Next was the pinion seal. They ordered it and when it came in I brought the car to have it replaced and my first oilchange. When I brought it in, I showed the guy that I had rubbing in the rear wheelwells too. I also showed him that when the monkey who fixed the speedo rattle pryed the dash apart, he ruined it with his screwdriver...I mean "prytool". He assured me that that was the only way to remove the dash. I said...look...I'm a machinist. If someone brings in...say a pump that needs a new shaft and I damage the housing...I FIX or REPLACE it!!! He reluctantly "said" he'd order a new dash. He also ordered the retainers for the wheelwells.
I work at 4 (and told them that). I called at 2 to see how they were comming..."well the oil is changed and it's sitting here waiting for the seal to go in" (it had been there since 8a.m.). When I called back at 3:45, they THEN said..."oh yeah...it's an 8 hour job so do you want us to do it tomorrow or on another day". OK I'm trying REALLY hard not to say some bad words right now. Anyway...I said...I'll just bring it back when the retainers arrive and you can do the seal then cause I really need my car.
So....they (retainers) come-in a couple weeks later and I take it in to have the seal and retainers done.
I picked it up and while the dash wasnt in yet, the seal was replaced and ONE retainer. When I originally showed the retard where the rubbing was, I only pointed-out the driver's side so thats the only side they did.
I have a 98 dodge 4X4 that I bought used a few years ago. Everytime I buy a used vehicle I change ALL the fluids, filters, plugs, wires, belts as necessary...blah blah...kinda a getting to know you thing I guess. Well the truck has a LSD too and stupid me didnt add any additive when I changed the diff fluids. OK so now my truck's rearend (clutchpack and stuff) is toast.
I told the GM idiots to make SURE to put additive or whatever is required for a lsd...like a HUNDRED times. When I picked it up and was signing the papers (at the parts counter) I said...hey, does it show anywhere (invoice?) whether or not additive was put in. The condascending "expert" at the parts counter said...."oh they all have the additive built-in to the fluids these days". Yeah ok...whatever...AS IF they'd put expensive additives in ALL their gear oil if you only need it in LSDs...there's a big moneysaver...pffff
GOD I'm MAD right now. They are such IDIOTS...like all of them at this dealership. And...I do NOT EVER go in there with attitude. For instance, when my trunk was (is) misaligned, or the speedo rattled, I was apologetic for being so picky. AYWAY.....
The pinion seal was done, I'm guessing, about 2500miles ago. I might just be hearing things (co-incidently, hearing things very similar to what I hear in my truck), but after cruising at about 80mph for an hour or so, and comming in to a slower (50mph) area, I can get the arse end to howl if I just barely stay into the throttle. It sounds a lot like tirehowl but goes away under acceleration or deceleration....just like my truck. I'm pretty sure I'm starting to hear some nice grinding too when I'm taking very slow very tight turns...like in a parking lot or something.
So I called the DUMMIES back the other day...the service dept, and asked if additive was put in. He says.....hmmm....doesnt look like it...let me find the mechanic and look into it and call you back. The next day when I called HIM back, he said...uhhh yeah...you dont need additive with the synthetic stuff...GM says so.
Of course, I cant find my owner's manual ANYWHERE so I dont know if it says anything in there but...When I changed all the fluids in my truck, I used synthetic too and ....uhhh yeah it's 1500 bucks to fix that and thats a DEAL.
So boys and girls.......what now?
Anyone got a link to a manual or something from GM that says it needs additive?...if it DOES....again, I COULD just be hearing things.
I still have to do some dealing with them with the other retainer (even the TSB says replace BOTH retainers!!!) and the dash that they wrecked.
Thanks in advance. I think I better go take a chillpill now or something.
I beleive in the addition of the additive is specifically mentioned in the TSB..either way this service department is completely incompetent..and just cost themselves the differential replacement.....am looking for that TSB now.. I do know the additive is required in sols with the LSD option.....

still looking...found the TSB..but nothing mentioning the additive..here is what they should have used...
gear oil, it's the GM 75w90 synthetic. Should also have had One 4 oz. bottle of GM #1052358 Limited Slip Axle Lubricant Additive added on the ticket also if you have an LSD.
Im sure its in the service manual if the bother to look it up.....
OK the TSB posted here on the forum doesnt specifically mention additive......is simply states fluid change...but regardless....all of us that have had it done.....got the additive.....though we all mentioned it to our service departments as well...

My diff ventilator was leaking and was replaced about 2 weeks ago. Only after that replacement did I begin to notice a drivetrain whine in 1st & 2nd gear. Not bad but definite.
Don't know if they had to drain the fluid to replace the ventilator, but I'll be keeping an eye out for that TSB from PAO. I may be chatting up my SR soon.

When they replace my seal yesterday, the just topped the fluid off, didn't drain it.
Some synthetics such as Amsoil and maybe Redline do not require the additive as it is already in the mix. It won't hurt a standard rear.

It is in the owners manual under specifications, the amount of SYNTHETIC lube and the ADDITIVE with the GM part#. I got that same low speed howl between 35 and 38 mph and I already changed the fluid in the diff myself. Did not make a difference. My dealer says the howl is normal. Yea, right!! Since when having to turn the radio up in order to here the station over the howl normal???? I going to take mine to another dealer, whose service techs have IQ's higher than their shoe size.
I really do not understand why you would continue to return to the same dealer. There is a tremendous difference from one dealer to another. Unless there is no other dealer within 50 miles you should switch.
This is what I did after I had a really less than satisfactory experience.
I do wish you the best of luck but do not continue to expect satisfactory results from your current dealer
a lot people have been saying don't take the car back to the same dealer that you bought it from. Tip you are still under warranty, (did you keep the work record) take this with you when you change to another (any) Pontiac (GM ) dealer must service your ride if it takes longer than expected they are to provide you with another vehicle to drive while yours is in the shop. Be sure they see you writing down the milage or take a pic of it and make mention of it if they didn't. Some are reporting excess of 20 - 30 miles extra on the odometer. Good Luck
When they replace my seal yesterday, the just topped the fluid off, didn't drain it.

J-..if they didnt drain the fluid..then they didnt follow the TSB correctly.....you may have a problem again...the TSB specificially tells them to drain the fluid to remove any possible contaminants...which may be causing the seal failure to begin with......I would question why they didnt follow the TSB...and how could they possibly know whether or not to add more LSD additive........I personally wouldnt be a happy camper..if the service department didnt follow the GM TSB.....
"""When replacing the pinion seal, first drain the rear axle fluid. This also helps remove metal contaminants that may be present and may have caused the initial leak condition. Next, remove the leaking seal. Install the new seal and yoke. Lastly, refill the rear axle. This should prevent the lube from being trapped behind the dust shield. """
