Running an event on a rain date is fraught with strange and incongruous circumstance. For one thing, it may be raining heavier on the rain date than it was on the original date, yet still, you go for it. Friends don’t bother to call and just roll over and go back to sleep because they assume that if you wouldn’t run in the threat of rain last week, you won’t run in rain this week. Apparently, this assumption turns out to be false, no matter how imbued it is with the ring of truth.
For another thing, you may soon find out that special events are taking place in conflict with your own. You may have checked for bazaars and fairs on the original date, but overlooked them on the rain date, yet there they are, blocking the road. And isn’t that much like the road that was paved a week ago and today is torn up. We had one of those, too.
Yet, in spite of it all, eighteen hardy souls in twelve cars formed a squadron to attack a winery, a legitimate military target. Starting two hours late due to the inclemency of the weather, yet making up the loss in rerouting, we arrived on target and on time, at 4:05 PM, in sunlight. Six of us in four cars made the final run to the end, and it was glorious.
Many were called, but few were chosen. And no Gold Coast Run shall ever go by, from this day forward, but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of sisters and brothers. And gentle people abed at home shall look upon these pictures and think themselves accursed they were not here, and hold their manhood cheap while any speaks that drove with us upon this Crisp Autumn day.
Karen and Reed, my wingmen, I thank you. Karen, your work on the booklet deserves extra kudos, especially since you did it while under germ attack. Sky07-- “T” – you’re a monster driver. I’m glad you were able to solo out here. Thanks to all our out-of-towners, including Morfious and 07Bluestone for crossing a bridge too far. Solli, nice pix, good eye. Even your grab shots were nice. I saw them all. Gino, we were NOT going that fast, but it looked cool to think so. Thanx for joining the run, and thanx for ferrying T's sister home. Barry and Barbara, thanx for going the distance. We finished the bottle tonight. It was goooooood.
Next year, we’ll run it again. The last sections, the ones almost everyone missed, were fast and fun and dry. Thanx to everyone who came out, especially if you don’t do rain!
To those who were sick, get well soon. And thanks for not giving it to the rest of us. Pep, thanx for coming out with moral support when you should have been home with chicken soup. To the rest, I say, brush up your Shakespeare!

I busted my but all week just to have Sunday open for the run, then I started to feel ill Friday into Saturday, when I got up Sunday morning I was going to come and ruff it out, but I just could not do it. I'm sure I missed a great run....

Awww Pep, he just gives you a hard time 'cause we missed you! I hope you are feeling better. It's tough when you want to go so bad but it's even tougher to make the decision that you can't run because you just plain old feel like crap and also have the fear of infecting others. I for one am glad you decided to take your germs home
Maybe if some of you guys that missed it want to get together some time we can run the first half (two sections) again. It's way more fun to run topless so we will probably have to wait until spring or a surprisingly beautiful day that comes out of nowhere.
I gotta say that I loved that one way road along the water where we saw the bridge and all stopped to get out and see the amazing houses on one side and the water with the brisge on the other. it was crazy how the Bronx was under sunlight and we weren't. LOL Was that in Lloyd Harbor?

I found that spot by accident on the first day I doped out the run basics. It is my favorite stop and look spot, too. It's at the tip of Sands Point where it faces Kings Point. In the novel, "The Great Gatsby", that spot was known as "East Egg" while the Kings Point equivalent was "West Egg". I've been there, too and it's also beautiful. To get there we'd have to go through Great Neck, which is very densly populated with a lot of street congestion, so I chose to start in Sands Point.

To be that sick and still come to see us off was virtually heroic. I enjoyed your mid-run phone call to tell me I was "Car of the Month". I know you wanted to be there. I wish you could have been.
I just noticed something in your post ". . . couped up in a solstice . . ." Nooo. You're getting a coupe? (This rumor started here).

This is a great idea! On a different day, we could also run the last two sections starting in Northport and then do a tour of a few wineries on Sound Ave. Starting in Northport it's a two hour run and then wine and lunch and more wine.

If you guys do this again give me a shout - if I'm off I'll come over. I saw sights I'd need a week to take in. So beautiful! How often does a NJ'er see two guys in yellow plastic skippering a skiff for oyster? I thought the weather added to the ambiance of your lush, lusty Long Island.
T -sorry I scared ya with my driving but I haven't taken anyone out yet.
What was the name of the town with the trolly tracks? I missed it.
