Most of yesterday I spent scouting the route for GCR2. I'm pretty sure the start will be at the Landmark Diner at the corner of Northern Boulevard (25A) and Port Washington Blvd. There's plenty of parking as the adjoining professional building should be empty on Sunday. I'm going to check it out for breakfast this Sunday at around 7:30 AM to see if I'm right. I'm choosing a restaurant location over a park so everyone can get some food and the indispensable coffee right away. Also, the location is a snap to get to, not just for us natives, but for anyone coming from out of town. We'll be an easy shot from the Throgs Neck Bridge, with exits from the Cross Island Parkway, Northern State Parkway and LIE 495 just a hop away.
Right now, the route takes us through Plandome, Manhasset, and Sands Point, down through Roslyn and back up into Glen Head and Glen Cove before turning to more familiar territory in Mill Neck, Bayville and Oyster Bay.
I had wanted a start going up through Great Neck and into Kings Point, but most of the area is so like Queens, with rows of apartment buildings, and the roads themselves are so dull and gridlike, that the occasional burst of beauty simply got outweighed. Too bad. There are actual villages there that no one has ever heard of, like Thomaston, Saddle Rock and Kensington, and the main drag up through Great Neck Plaza on Middle Neck Road reveals some of the great and beautiful history of the place. Kings Point, after all, is "West Egg" in The Great Gatsby.
In the end, I had to consider that, steeped in history or not, the place had to be something fun to drive a top-down sports car through, and most of it wasn't, so I opted out. The best run section, through Kings Point and the ritzy houses, is a dead end with a turn-around. So, decision made. We shall begin by examining "East Egg", Sands Point and run like the wind through all the Long Island peninsulas east of there.
Here is a link to the map that will show you the Landmark Diner Start Point.
Landmark Diner
1023 Northern Blvd
Roslyn, NY 11576

(1023 is the listed address for the diner. For some reason, Google Maps gets the street view photo right at #1009. At 1023 they show a car wash.)
The Gold Coast Run 2 sound really interesting. Is it Sept 28th ?
We are considering it if that is the date.
I keep reading about a poster and would like the link to be posted.
Thanks

Steve, this IS the thread for the Gold Coast Run 2. The poster you've been hearing about is on Page 1. Your recent post appeared on Page 2, as will this post. Just use the little page number link in the little boxes right there in the margins and click on the "1". Or, click the link below!
So far, I have posted links to this thread on the LISSC thread and on the Sky Forum (the thread there is called "September Run". If you would like to post links back to this run thread in other places, just click the link below. Copy and paste the url wherever you think is appropriate and you will be doing me a great favor.
Sunday, August Thoid: Ran the first 40 miles of GCR2. (Boy, my legs are tired).
Supoib! Mahvellous!
Perfect Fall-like day today, so it felt like late September. In fact, it was just like GCR1!
While there are details, including some side roads to get us off a few ugly main roads, that still need to be worked out, by and large (what does that mean?) the route is fantastic with a great mix of roads.
Last year, many of you indicated you wanted some stretch out and drive sections, and we've got 'em. There are still twisties, enough for any budding race driver, but there are gentler curved country roads, too, and a section I call the Speedway!
I've been working on a few surprises based on some other run ideas we've been talking about. Also, there is more coffee availability, and more waterviews and restrooms. . . . Hmmm. The logic of that sequence just revealed itself to me.
We're gonna see some real ritzy houses, some historical buildings and we'll drive through the heart of several picturesque villages.
If you haven't signed up yet, what are you waiting for?
Thanks! If you could give that to Mark I would appreciate it. Looks like he's going to need it instead.
SMARTA$$
It all still depends on work schedules.

You asked this once before, didn't you? And I never answered it. Now I know what that nagging, unresolved feeling was!
I never stay in local hotels, obviously, though I know where a few are. When are you coming out? Saturday night? The Coliseum Marriott will put you close enough to the start point while keeping you centrally located in Nassau (Uniondale) within easy reach of most of your friends here.
