manufacturing/build procedure question

I see VIN numbers on this forum all over the map as to later number VIN owners who have their car already and lower VIN's who have no idea where their car is. Question: What is the procedure for building a car, are there turn-off's coming off the main assembly line where some cars go that have certain options or equipment that others do not? Could there be Solstices that were ordered with Chrome wheels sitting on jackstands just waiting for the Chromes to arrive? There seems to be no rhyme or reason on production if you go strictly by VIN numbers. Whats up?

It's very common for veh's that were built months ago to be delivered after veh's just produced. The reason it is so hard to make changes to an order that is past event code 3000 is because the plant only stocks the exact amount of parts to cover for the veh's that will be produced that day. The plant knows if they are going to be short on a certain part and if they are short on that part then it goes on the constraint wire with a limited availability.

Also factor in new car launch some cars get "held" for some quality check or issue while others are shipped without a hold.

There are several reasons that the order in which cars are delivered doesn't match the order in which they are built.

Regarding the First 1000 special vehicles, there were several different instances where quality issues arose, and different groups of cars were held back for inspections, rework, retesting, etc. Causing the shipment of a lot of early F1K cars to be delayed for weeks or even months. This part really sucks, especially for those F1K owners still waiting for their cars, with no explanations of what is going on.

The second reason is basic geography. Cars being delivered to places geographically closer to Deleware will most likely get delivered faster. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that the farther destinations get deliveries by rail, which is a much slower process than direct shipping by truck. This is just pure luck based on where GM decided to build the Solstice, and a fact that we all must accept as is.

Those would be the "batch and holds"
It's very rare GM produces veh's produces when there is a part shortage.
