The dealership is repainting my front bumper today....
I was thinking about it and it occurred to me that I really dont know what the rules are about freshly painted cars.
I think you have to wait three months before waxing,, but i'm not sure.
Can anyone give me some guidelines on how long I should wait to wash / wax / drive on the highway etc etc?

The body shop I use always tells me the same thing:
For the next 30 days after painting:
1) If you can leave it in the garage DO SO
2) If you can leave it in the garage put a car cover on it
3) If you must drive the car after driving if you see anything on the paint brush it off as fast as possible. (use a light wet brush then dry it quickly after)
4) Do not take it to a car wash or if you do make sure it is a brushless carwash
After the 30 days is up:
Wash and wax the car right away. This will protect the paint and make sure it will last you a good long time.
After waxing the car:
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like good advice encriptor. New paint needs time to cure properly. Waxing too soon can cause the fumes coming off the paint as it cures to be trapped in the paint and cause damage to the new paint.
I'd ask your bodyshop specifically what they recommend. Exact timeframes may vary slightly depending on the type of paint, thinners, flex agents, etc (Chemicals) they are using in that shop.
There are also less abrasive waxes that should be used on relatively new vehichles as opposed to older ones that need more buffing effects.
When my rear bumper cover was replaced and painted, the body shop told me no wax for 30 days. Also no California Duster for 30 days as well. They were concerned about the parafin wax in the duster could be problematic until the paint fully cured. Also my local Venture Shield rep told me 30 days before applying their product unless the new paint is baked after being applied. So the thought occured to me , you would either have to bake it (can the plastic bumper cover be baked?) or leave you car in the garage for a month if you wanted the shield applied after new paint work. Fortunately mine was my rear cover so I did not have that dillema.

I use Turtle Wax Ice, because it is a polymer, and does not remove any paint. Their rule is 30 days from date of manufacture for a new car, 60 days for repainted finishes, because new car paint is baked at higher temps than repainted cars.
I dont have a garage so it'll have to be outside. I do have a car cover but thought the cover being streched across the bumper might not be the best idea.
What about washing? is there any problem with that?

zaino show car polish can be applied two days after taking your car from being painted. without the zfx or z1 though. i put a coat on the nose of our Firehawk and didnt buff it off when the nose got repainted before i drove it home from the body shop. buffed it off in the garage the next day after lightly brushing off the road dust. then i put another coat on and buffed if off that night... the wife drove it to work the next day... it contains absolutely no solvents...

broh, no offense intended.. but just because something is a polymer, does not mean its safe for a newly painted car... some polymers contain solvents... and yours does..thats why they say "30 days....60 days for ..........". ie. my zaino post above. its a polymer... no abrassives or solvents, safe for brand new cars.
