Glad you are OK, your post sounds like you stayed relatively in control during the incident, if it happened to me my post would have a more freaked out tone to it. I hope GM is made aware of this, could be an isolated event but your vehicle does have high mileage, could be a durability issue with the harness. Also if you do experience a financial loss I would thing GM should compensate you in some way.
Dan, glad you are okay. GM needs to be made aware of this immediately, just in case yours is not the first wiring harness to go up in flames spontaneously. If the flames would not go out until teh battery was disconnected it sounds like a hard short to ground somewhere in the positive side coming off the battery or possibly in teh steering column. Have you had any noise in the column? BTW, even though with all the circuit breakers and fuses, if things get hot enough to melt the wires it'll short right across what should be a broken circuit.

Wow a cooked lion! Glad your ok! This smakes me worry about the fact my DIC never works.
Also I too am curious as to how the air bag can go off...SCARY STUFF...Maybe santa has a GXP in the bag this year for you!
As a rule, the dedicated lead for the airbag is isolated, but in this case it seems the fire allowed the module to see it's voltage anyway, and that's all that's needed for deployment. This is just speculation of course.
I certainly agree with achieftain that GM NEEDS to see this car for the actual cause.
Wow! GREAT job keeping it all under control during that series of events ... airbag deployment, melted/dripping plastic, smoke, fire ... and even an extinguisher failure! Just Wow! Very glad you're OK and that there were helpful people around. Good luck getting things all straightened out.
Glad to hear you are OK. Id write pontiac a nice little letter. This might be a known problem to them and they just havent received enough complaints to warrant the recall. Im sure the insurance will cover it as its no fault to you.
I tell them replace the car with an 2008 Z06! LMAO! Hell they should give you a lot with he defects that you faced. Cause whether the case maybe, I am sure you didn't sabatoge your own vehicle. DAMN THE MAN! lol
Location: Checking out the new sway bar in my Sol!
Dear Lord, that is just horrible, Dan! I'm glad you escaped without too much injury!

I think you did a awesome job handling the situation.
Hope everything goes well with getting Nittany back to working order, or getting a new one.

I have no idea what triggered the initial problem - DIC warnings.
But air bags are dangerous, even after they deploy!! So much wiring, and fire potential is high.
My wife lost her Chry. New Yorker years back. Son driving, hit a small ditch. No damage to car. Air bag deployed. Ten minutes later the car was engulfed in flames. Car burned to a crisp.
I hope everything works out!!!!!!
