Your smile sums up the end result. Permagrin back in place. Congrats. I'm very happy for you and Nittany.

And of course, GM did not have to lift a finger or do any more than sell parts to your insurance company through your dealer for repairs that might not have been as complete. Bravo, GM. The only, repeat, ONLY GM vehicle to ever, EVER experience a clock-spring failure? Where's the dash plaque for that? (hint for SOSIII). But am I reading between the lines that quite possibly some other carmaker has had such a failure?
Chief, if an insurance company had to pay for all the work and parts that needed to be put in place to restore Nittany as she was, you can believe that they would have been in contact with GM to exact reimbursement from GM, and it would have been pretty much and open and shut case, and would probably have set GM back more than what they did for Dan.
GM did the right thing here, from several different perspectives.
It looks great! I am so glad Dan that you have her all fixed and back in your possession. Way to go!

EMM are you going to stop at the gentlemens home that helped put out the fire and show him what it looks like without the flames? everything looks great, hope to see it at some of the runs.
Sorry, but I just had to re-post because the change in Nittany is so dramatic. Major kudo's to GM for stepping up to the plate. In this day and age, that is not always the case.

Dan, Nutting looks fantastic. It is a welcomed conclusion that you were truly one in a million. Wait, let me re-phrase that. As has been said so many times, if you had not the wherewithall to survive the incident AND preserve Nittany from full destruction in the process it might have been much more difficult for a determination of what transpired.

We talked a little about that with the GM rep that was present.
I can't say for sure that this is the only clock spring failure, but that was the impression we got.
GM has had other (I don't know how many) airbag issues, and the most common reason for their deployment is usually related to some form of corrosion in the wiring harness. Most often caused by some other unrelated incident that compromised the integrity of the harness seals.
Bottom line was that airbags can and do deploy for many reasons, most traceable to an outside influence.
In this case they know that the clock spring did malfunction, but the investigation has yet to reveal the root cause of that failure.
None of us drivers of Sols/Skys or any other GM vehicle are any more at risk of this happening to us, than anyone else on the road.

Wow!
Great episode for the forum and all Solstice Owners out there! I have been into the steering column of my 93 Bonneville and have an idea of what broke. It is great to hear and see what corporate RESPONSIBILITY looks like! Fantastic RESPONSE and a heartwarming demonstration of the ABILITY to put things right. No lawsuit would ever take away the consternation (terror?) of the event itself, but a rapid and concerned response that sets thing to right leaves a warm feeling and a sense of hope (not to mention a beautiful 1K'er all running and shining) with a large segment of sports car owners. Thanks for the big "share" EMM and thanks, GM, for doing it right!
