Also, the 2.0 (LNF) in the Solstice is not the same engine (although there are some similar parts) as the other 2.0's in GM's lineup. Exceptions are the new Cobalt SS and HHR SS which both have the LNF motor.

There have been several articles written on the reasons why GM changed from the 2.4 L to the 2.0L LNF engine. One very good and easy to understand article is "Amazing Ecotec2.0 Turbo(LNF)engine." You can find this article on the INTERNET just Google the above title.
A short answer to your question is the 2.0L engine went through a major strengthening program. Every major casting was recast to improve reliability, the engine bore was reduced to increase cylinder wall thickness, the crank is forged steel, water jackets are deeper for added cooling capacity and improved cylinder-bore roundness. Besides the crank improvement, the bottom end also features forged rods and cast pistons which have a dish face that deflects the fuel toward the spark plugs. The LNF engine was also fitted with variable valve timing and direct injection.
I could go on and on, but read the article mentioned above it will give you a lot of detail in addition to the basics I provided above. Hope this heads you in the right direction.

GM took the basic 2.4 design and reduced bore and shortened stroke to strengthen the motor for Turbo. Addition of direct injection is the next biggest change along with adding the Turbo.

Better fuel economy could be another reason. There could be many reasons but just remember you don't need to have major displacement. Look around and you will some small displacement motors that make large power and some larger displacement making the same power. Take the classic EVO/STi war:
EVO: 2.0L = 291hp/300tq
Sti: 2.5L = 305hp/290tq
Plus last I heard the 2.0L ECOTEC has seen power of upto 1,400 HP. From day one when we all saw the ECOTEC here in 2002 being used in the Cavalier Dragster it was a 2.0L Turbo motor when the only version on the market was the 2.2L.
Personally I felt like GM always intended on making the ECOTEC 2.0L boosted powerhouse. And the 2.4L was more of the N/A solution. Because we have never seen a 2.0L N/A setup even from offering in the Cobalt it was Supercharged. And now we have a line of 1.8L ECOTECS and the even smaller displacement motors that are comming over as well.
The replacement for displacement is boost, and as we know with CAFEE standards being what they are, and the price of fuel being what they are you are more bound to see smaller displacement motors replaceing our usual 2+L motors. The only reason I don't see them going away is because if they are smart they will boost a larger displacement 4 cyl or a smaller displacement 6 cyl to start replacing the current 6 and 8 cyl options.
But then again this is only my opinion and I have no documentation to back it up.

thanks all you guys&Gals out there for your response to my question I am sure glad that I found this forum surfing the Internet its already been a big help to me. Thinking about a CIA and new cat back exhaust for my car is it worth the money?I talked to a guy Sunday at a local car show who had I think a 2006 or it could have been a 2005 don't remember. But it was the only Solstice 2.4 there so it attracted me like a magnet had the hood open and I noticed that he had a CIA installed. After talking to him he told me that the CIA and duel exhaust were factory installed from GM.He told me that GM notified 25 of the first people who ordered a new car and asked them if they would be interested in some free factory up grades so GM put the CIA on and Dual exhaust on for him at the factory. So I thought I would share this interesting little tidbit with the rest of the readers OZZ
