RMR style bar installed

DeepblueGXP, Dark Tech and I installed my RMR style bar yesterday. It took us about 3 hours. DBG has all the pictures. This is not a simple install or for the faint of heart. You have to do some pretty drastic mods to the car to install it. It requires drilling a 1 3/4" hole in the silver bar behind the seats, and a little surgery on the panels that flip up when you raise the top. It makes it slightly harder to put the top up and down. I got mine in black because I had already color matched all the silver, I think it looks really good with the Mean. I got to drive the 100 miles home top down yesterday and got a lot of looks, not that I wouldn't have anyway.

X2!! post some pics!! Also very interested in how a tech inspection would view it for 'track' work. This is on my short list too. Congrats on the new mod!

I don't think it will pass tech, it has the 3 required attachment points, but only one is to the frame. The way it is installed it is very stable and has a large bolt to the frame same place the seat belts attach. The other 2 points are where the top attaches to the car, this has proven to be a very strong point when people have rolled the car but not sure it will qualify. I am sure DBG will post soon.

here they come.

We started by removing the folding doors. The instructions were a little vague. There is a single C clip that must be pulled on the spring side and then you can pull the door towards the side and it will slide off the other hinge pin. That will allow you to pull up and off with the door. We followed the instructions for removing the support brace and then the hinge nuts. This part was a PIA.

The whole top in the retracted position needed to be pryed with a screwdriver to get the hinge to fold over enough to get the large washers off.

I then slid in the brace on the wrong side, my son caught that. The next pic is in the wrond spot.

This is in the right way, everthing was put in barely tightened to allow for line up of hardware.

We used the templates to drill the 1 3/4 hole and discovered that there is metal to cut through also. I didn't have a metal cutting hole saw so I used a router bit with a drill. We ran into problems with the spring tensioner getting in the way so i had to remove.

Here it is with the metal removed. I tried using a jig saw first but the peice became to weak and flexed. I cracked the top plastic but it gets covered up with the style bar so Lil Goat said don't worry about it.

We placed the style bar in place following the instructions.

The right aft edge of the bar over hung a little and we tried several things, loosening all the bolts and shoving forward while tightening but it still hung over almost a 1/4 inch. We were concerned with the trunk closing.

I cut the doors with the provided template and installed them, lining the panel up and marking where to drill the hole.

The top puts pressure again the bar so opening and closing the trunk is a PIA, Lil Goat will have to describe.

Looks good, definitely something I'm going to look into this summer. I want to get on the local track, but I doubt this would work.

I'm not to big into cones, I want to get on a real track...

The issues with putting the top up are you have to remove and store the little plates, and the wings don't pop up as far.

Something you don't really see is the hole you see in this picture goes down about 6" and bolts to the frame with the seat belt bolt, it is a very solid connection to the frame.

Ok, so how many of you reading this cringed seeing that big ol' 1 3/4 " hole drilled in the panel. LOL. Just kidding. I know I had to take a big breath before I drilled into mine. Knew it would be worth it when it was done. Did you have as hard of a time getting the two upright flat bars mounted to both ends as I did? I see you went behind the lower black plate also.

Looks great man and I like the black. I stuck with the silver.
