What great pictures Solli, thanks for sharing. It was nice getting to meet you twice, didn't get to see you much that first time in KC.I know you and your son will have lots of memories from your Sol trip.
Thanks, it was good meeting you, too. Lots of fun finding my way out of Robbinsville. 'specially after getting hit in the head by a giant African killer bee that flew in my window on Rt.74. I swear he was the size of my thumb with a 1/4 in. stinger! damn near gave me heart failure seeing him sitting on my leg like that. Couldn't get the car stopped fast enuf.

What a great trip you had. Thanks again for sharing the pictures and your thoughts. The Wigwam Motel. Didn't think any of those still existed. Looks like you went back in time. Super.

solli, if you haven't yet seen the movie Cars, now is the time to see it. It will mean so much more to you now that you've seen Route 66.

Aha! Speaking of cars... while I was in Shamrock, Texas I went over to Main St. and on the way I ran into the U Drop Inn on RT.66.
I got talking to the curator whose name is Doris (my mom's name) and she told me that this 1936 Art Deco building was restored by the town for $125 mil in order for Pixar to reproduce it for their movie "Cars." It now houses the Chamber of Commerce.
While I was estatically looking around, I spotted a picture on the wall and my jaw dropped. It was a red Solstice done up like a "Car" character.
That was it for me! Doris said that the owner had just been in before me (I saw him park & leave) and the car belonged to his daughter. Well, you just know that I had to leave the forum's name with Doris.
The building in the movie is renamed "Ramone's" and I spent the next two days tracking down that toy in every Walmart I could find. I finally found it in Memphis. (Thanks, Elvis!)

Don't forget the tax, nearly an additional 50%, for a total of 13.8 cents per gallon.
I have a client that would pay big money for one of those fuel pumps! Anyone know where one is available?

These were donated by a family in town. There's a small plaque on the wall which provides the couple's name.
The inner office is loaded with period items. It looks as if the station owner just stepped out for a moment.

Those are Pics wicked....would love to do it some day. Maybe when I retire. Plan on a run to Nashville from Canada next year but I doubt it will top your trip.
Man what pictures and what a great trip. I'm sold, thanks to you. I really have to do it. You guys will always have such a wealth of memories to share. The trip is clearly great but the bonus of sharing with the right person must make it perfect. I'm sure you could start listing out places to go and things to do, so be ready for lots of requests from jealous voyeurs (like me) about how to plan a similar experience.(hope you won't mind being the pioneer on this). Well, I've been wondering all along how you and Michael (super hat) were doing but man what a "Show and Tell". It's good to have you guys back and can't help wondering what you two do for an encore! -bird
