Right this minute on Discovery Channel 28 (East Coast) I'm watching my road trip backwards...

16 kids and their 2 parents are in a motor home heading from NM to the Grand Canyon. They just stopped off at the Pow Wow Inn in Tucumcari
on Rt. 66!

Too cool!

You've succeeded in making me homesick. I'm already sol-sick. I'm going to have to do a cross-country trip with my family when we come back to the 'states... if not before (on leave halfway through my tour maybe). Meanwhile, road trips through the Alps will have to suffice. I think we're going to Sicily in October.

It's good to hear from you 2KWK4U! I think road trips through the ALPs would definately ease the pain.
Take pictures if you go to Sicily!

I tried to keep track of the mileage but gave up after the trip meter went to 0 for the fourth time... I started at 7100, ended at around 16,860. I did take a pic when it rolled over to 10,000 miles on 7/22 in Yellowstone.

Big Things

A 2,100 year old Redwood tree, cut in 1946 weighed 42 tons. Rt. 101 Garberville, CA

Sequoia roots in Mariposa Grove, CA

West Yellowstone, Montana

Oklahoma wind power generators along side Rt. 66. USA Today had an article about their merits on 7/28. I first spotted them on a ridge in Wyoming, then again in California. Apparently, California generates the most electricity from them.

The King

It’s hard to believe that Elvis bought this 14 acre mansion in 1957 for $100,000 when he was only 22 years old.

The front rooms are formal but the "Jungle Room" and basement play rooms were pretty outrageous. My camera began to act up and a lot of my photos are blurry but it's clear that the King had style.

Guests were received in his living room w/custom built couch

'70's kitchen

The "Jungle Room" adjacent to the kitchen is the entire length of the house.

Basement pool room, one of three very large entertainment rooms. The pleated fabric covered every inch of the walls & ceiling.

I was surprised at my emotional reaction to visiting his home. I felt sad afterwards that his presence was no longer with us.
He really seemed like a down to earth guy.

Welcome back Solli4me! I took Rt66 to the National meet and plan to do Tx to Ca next year. I enjoyed the preview of what lies ahead, it looks like the best part of 66 is from Texas to California. I cant wait after seeing the pictures and the drive up the California coast looks like everything I have heard it is. Having seen all this I am sure you will be forever changed.

Connectivity is a good thing

Funny, now when I watch a NM or AZ filmed car commercial or a news broadcast from Boulder, CO I yell out to nobody in particular: "Hey! I know that place!"

Neat feeling, huh?

I've seen but a sliver of this beautiful nation, but I've seen enough small shards in enough different locations that I do the same thing. I often click on the TV or watch a movie and think, "I've been there or close to there."

If you want my opinion, and you probably don't , I think this makes my life a lot richer. I see these places I've been to and I flash-back to the people I met, meals I ate, or the way I might have felt. I'm glad I didn't wait until my retirement years to do it.

jimbo, your opinion is invaluable! You filled in the gaps very nicely.

Your comment of shards & slivers brings me to this:
I actually do mosaic "shardwork" as a hobby. Basically I try to transform broken dreams and discarded memories (in the form of vintage dinnerware/pottery) into something different, beautiful and new.

I have this thing for preservation which fuels my fascination for the old towns on the Route 66 circuit. If I can't save/keep/restore it, I'll just have to photograph it.

This is one of the reasons that I wanted to move my kids around when the Army moved me. I always told them that when they saw something on TV or in a book that they could describe the rest of the surroundings because they had been there.

So much to see, so many places to go, and only so little time to really get there.
