   Are splash guards a necessity?

Greetings all...I have just about 1,000 miles on my mysterious sol. Just today after washing my car, I noticed many small scratches to the clearcoat in front of the rear wheel extending up into the lower door panel. The paint is smooth to the touch and these marks disappear when the car is wet but reappear as soon as it drys. This is obviously caused by the front tire throwing road debris back into the body. Although I'm not sure I like the look of the splash guards, this condition almost makes their installation mandatory!?! I am interested in your opinions and also offer this post as a warning to be aware of this posible paint damage. Also, any info on the best way to repair this damage would be appreciated. Turbomgt...any ideas?
Regards,
John

That's the next thing I've got to get done-washed mine the other night, and had mud splatters from behind the front tires all the way back. Looks like another trip through the coin op wash to rinse it off today. Was going to just do the rear guards, because of the very tight clearance between the front tires and the well, didn't want snow to pack in there. But don't care for the splatters all down the sides!!

The Splash Gaurds are a must, Just look at how far the tires stick out beyond the wheel wells. You will pay now for the Gaurds, or in a Year from now pay for the paint to fix the sandblasting to your paint. Mitch

That's interesting...I was considering doing only the front guards. There doesn't seem to be any paint damage behind the rear wheels...anybody out there with just the front guards installed...or just the rears for that matter? We need your opinions! Thanks,
John

Picked up mine yesterday. They don't look half bad either!

I have mine on order and they will call and install when in. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go with them either as I was concerned they would spoil the integrity of the car, but they definitely are needed. Going with black though. I think when you paint them to match the color, it 'does' mess with the integrity...but just my personal opinion. Black to mirror the black tires.

About installing rear guards:

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but the rear of the car... the ENTIRE rear of the car... gets dirtier than any car I've ever driven because the tires are so far to the back... fin.

Yep-the tires kick stuff straight up the back!!
The only bennie is it keeps people from tailgating when it's sloppy out there

Yes Fortimir and I had a discussion about this the other day.

I was contemplating ONLY getting the front, as splatters and rock chips seem to be a non-issue for the back since there's practically NO overhang. But he talked some sense into me and said that BECAUSE the rear overhang is barely there, that's why all the shelf areas on the back collect so much dirt so quickly.

It truly does seem like the best idea would be to get all 4.

I have really had second thoughts about mud guards. I like the appearance of the car without them but the sides of my car are always dirty from the front wheel splash. I am considering installing VERRRRRY SMALL guards that are interior to the wheel wells to see if they make any difference. I will avoid the guards on the rear as long as possible. Collection of dirt on the rear of the car will always happen due to it's shape. I'm hoping to have the 3M material put on my rocler panels and around the rear wheels. It won't keep the dirt off but it will keep the paint in better shape.

I also thought about using the 3M material on the rocker panels but the splash zone is too high up into the door panel for complete protection.
