There seem to be a few recent posts from people with tops that are developing tears or holes that may be getting top replacements in the near future. Please make sure you're dealing with a reputable dealer and if they don't do the top replacement themselves (most don't, I think) be sure they send it to a top notch upholstery shop.

Last year I read the threads about the missing plastic slider tabs and how it was tearing through roofs. I checked mine and sure enough it was missing the tabs and had aleady torn through the bottom layer of canvas. In October I took the car to my local dealership for an oil change I pointed this out (among several other small issues) and after seeing that a brand new vehicle had tabs and mine didn't, immediately offered to replace the top. They ordered the canvas "cover" and the two side rails with the slider tabs, but they were all backordered. The cover came in first but they couldn't get the weatherstrip rails. After waiting almost six months I finally called Pontiac Customer Service to complain and magically the parts finally showed up last week.

I took the car in on Monday for the replacement. They said they would send it out to an upholstery shop and it would be done Thursday. Sure enough, I get the call on Thursday and went down to pick it up. On the way home I stopped to inspect the top and was shocked to find that they had done a horrible job on the replacement.

None of the new weatherstrip was properly seated.
The front of the side weatherstrips do not mate properly with the front windshield strips.
The b-pillar on the passenger side no longer sits properly in it's socket, it sticks out.
The hook on the bottom of the same b-pillar is chewed up, like someone took a pliers to it.
The passenger side buttress pin no longer lines up with the hole in the trunk lid, it is off center.
The driver's side weatherstrip at the rear edge of the window glass deforms when the door is shut or the window is rolled up/down.
*EDIT* Also just found that the sliders just aft of the side windows under the "wings" where the buttress cables attach were not installed in their channels, they're just flapping around.

Needless to say I took it right back to the dealership and after the service advisor and service manager looked at it they asked me to leave the car and they would call me the next morning, yesterday. No calls all day, I left two messages with no response. I called the advisor again this morning and actually got him on the phone, and was told that they looked at the car yesterday morning and after sitting all night the weatherstrip had somehow "settled" and everything lined up perfectly. He also said they guy that installed the top came to look at it and claimed he didn't even touch the chewed up b-pillar hook. Uh Huh. Maybe the convertible top elves appeared in the middle of the night, got out their magic hammers and fixed it?

So I go to pick it up today and it's exactly the same as I left it. I showed the advisor and he advised that I bring it back again Monday when the manager is there. Basically it sat there for almost two days and nobody even touched it.

I did notice that the top and weatherstrips are considerably different than the original, obviously a newer (hopefully better) design, but maybe they are incompatible with my car?

Sorry for the long rant guys, but I needed to vent. Where should I go from here? What should I ask the manager to do? I don't want them to send it back to the same shop. Guess I'll find out on Monday...

Wow I feel for you. Haven't had any issues with my top (as of yet and hope not to) but I sure hope the sales manager can answer some questions for you...

Thats a crazy story! I always find it amazing when after describing and showing a shop the problem and figuring it's fairly obvious and they understand what i'm reporting, that they'll claim it's 'fixed' but it's no different than it was at first.

Anyway, i guess replacing the canvas is a new process. When my top was replaced, the insurance company said that the only fix for the canvas was to replace the entire $2000 assembly.

Good luck getting it worked out, patience will have it done to your standards.

Is your car an 08?

Where was the canvas rubbing? Are there any pictures?

My car is an 07 GXP, it is the same problem described in this post:

Top Catching Itself Issues

But mine never pinched, it just tore those rips in the canvas.

Same problem with mine...they added the tabs and patched the tear in my top. I also had a screw inside the top back out and the passenger side just flapped around...they replaced that too but mine doesn't line up with the socket in the door either. It hasn't since I first noticed the issue a few months ago. I can deal with pulling the passenger side into the tab, but the chewed up thingy and the fact that it was there for 2 days and mysteriously noone touched it blows me away. Mention that you will give poor survey grades to them if they do not make the problem right. The survey is what keeps them employed.

Spiky, I had the issue with the tab not lining up and the engineer at the plant tour fixed it by starting to retract the top, with about half way in, he pressed in on the side affected and flexed the arm so when he moved the top back to the up position, the tab lined up.

My top started separating right where the top touches the rear of the passenger door. Dealer looked at it and said they would replace it. Took six weeks to get the top in, but it was installed in one day. They did an outstanding job with the installation. Looks better than it did new from factory and works, seals perfectly. Guess I got lucky that I have a great dealer right near my house.

Well I havent investigated all you had probs with but I did find out yesterday while cleaning the interior that the upostry shop broke my back panels behind the seat. They overlap each other now and clips are broken. I plan on calling the dealership on Monday.

Well took it back today and pointed out all the problems to the service manager, while the advisor took notes. We double checked that all the issues were documented in the service write up. They said their trim guys would look at it, then it would probably be sent out again.
