This is what happens when you run over a plastic bag

About 2 months ago I ran over a plastic bag while driving and thought nothing of it. Until I started getting strange and slightly offensive odors after driving for any length of time. It took me a while to figure out exactly what it was:

That innocent plastic bag had melted and fused itself to my exhaust. Every time it would heat up it would melt a bit more, give off some toxic fumes and aggravate me. (Dengel even accused me of burning up my clutch at the Mecca II run). I guess after 2 months this crazy plastic bag would not burn itself off.

Well today I decided to put an end to this nonsense. Some internet research revealed that Easy-Off oven cleaner would do the trick. So I jacked up the rear end of the car put it on some jackastands and let it idle for 15 minutes. Sprayed on the oven cleaner and waited 10 minutes. The balck stuff came off in chunks (thanks to some encouragement from a putty knife). Here are the results after 3 minutes of scraping and cleaning:

Driving around today produces NO obnoxious fumes or odors. Now my car smells as good as it looks. Let this be a warning, plastic bags can be a hazard!!

It wasn't dengel it was me. You were smoking your clutch on the way to Speed Racer. Car looks way better, btw. Oh, and we'll see if this was the cause - just drive ahead of me at the next run and I'll let you know.

I had the same thing happen with a small child once. I scraped it off after about a month though. It kept stinking up the car and would whimper at night....

You should have invested in the self-cleaning exhaust...then you wouldn't have had to buy the oven cleaner!

Morfious, I thought of you and your melted bag problem yesterday. I was driving behind a car that was trailing some sort of bag from its underside. The bag was definitely caught or stuck on something under the car and I just kept thinking "Will they figure out its there before it melts and starts stinking?"

Glad you figured out how to clean it off, so now you won't get stuck at the back of the line on all of our runs!

This happened to me in my focus I had before. Although it was not melted like that because after I hit the bag within minutes I smelled it and knew what it was so I pulled over and yanked the bag off. No I cringe when I am in the sol and see a bag with the sol being so low.
