Hey everyone, a white Solstice caught fire last night around 11:00Pm right here in Denville on Route 80 east. My husband saw it burning up - I just got off the phone with the State Police to confirm - the trooper said the car was registered NJ and the driver was OK if anyone could be OK watching his car burn up. It was not a 2006 and that's all the information I could get out of him. Trooper said they didn't know the cause of the fire.
I'm sort of in a state of shock after XMM's car fire and all he went through.
IM the NHTSA's POC for our Fleet and am on the phone and pretty close to several guys in the Office of Defects and Investigation, who are quite aware of what I drive for my toy. During the strut rub campain for the GTO we were on the phone a lot, they have called me about the brake issue on the Solstice and are conducting a thorough investigation. They have never mentioned any fire problems... I hope that person reports this to NHTSA..the link is on their website.. I'll mention it to them tomorrow and see what they say.
OK, before everyone gets over-excited, I KNOW there have been issue with the Sol, alright?
I have seen four cars on fire in my life. None were Sols. The Solstice is not the first car to get caught in a car fire, new or used. Let's not cause a panic here
Some Solstice owners are very new to the car hobby, and are as impressionable as a parrot; if they hear "Sols catch fire!" they will repeat it, without knowing facts or why.
Let's find out the facts on this fire before we start running in circles, wringing our hands
It could have been accidentaly set by the driver or passenger of the car.
Let's get the facts please, before as Chris said start creating a panic that has no merit or subtance.

Chris is right, a Lotus Elise that was being test driven my a mechanic burst into flames a couple of days ago.

Who knows the cause but maybe he was smoking a cig or something and dropped the cig and voila a fire started. There are many possibilites so lets find out the cause first.

Yes, you level headed people are right - not to cause a fiero comparison panic but it was close to home in many ways for me - first my husband saw it burning and described it in detail over the phone which freaked me out since we were hosting our 3rd annual MASSC Rally at an exit right off route 80, just a few miles away. I probably overreacted because of the issue with XMM but hey - we are community aren't we?
When I get the chance I'll call around... the thing that got me was that no one seemed to be able to determine the cause of the fire.
Solli4me,
I understand your concern but as you know been on the Internet and the exposure this forum gets, we need to make sure the post is not misinterpret by the people that will read it.

I've had to pull over and extinguish a fire in the "smokers package" ashtray (the cupholder one) in my wife's Solstice while on a roadtrip with her. It's wise to not let it fill up very much or maybe even put a little bit of sand in the bottom of it.
p.s. It's not nice to scream "fire" in a crowded forum!
It is what it is. GM already knows what caused Dan's problem. I just reported the news and I won't apologize for it. I think GM is aware of the statistics of it occuring again if the problem is related to a wiring harness or an electrical issue.
But, it's just a darned strange full moon coincidence that it happened to be a Sols
