SSOOO Caravan to NASSM 2012 (Asheville NC)

2012 North American Solstice & Sky Meet
Summer Solstice in the Land of Sky
June 19th ~ 24th 2012

Time to start planning for Solstice Sky Owners of Ontario who will be travelling down to the 2012 North American Solstice Sky Meet in Asheville North Carolina. We did this for the 2010 NASSM to Canton Ohio and had a great time convoying down the interstates!

We need to start the discussion about:
  • Who is going?
  • Who wants to caravan down to Asheville?
  • What date we are leaving (Mon June 18 or Tues June 19)?
  • Where to stop for first night enroute to Asheville?
  • What date are we leaving Asheville (Sunday June 24)?

Carrie & I are booked in for Monday, so planning to leave Sunday. We are really hoping to travel with a bunch of SSOOO Comrades! Planned return is Sunday. We aren't concerned where first night stop is.
Would like to plan a visit to a Nascar race shop (ie. Tony Stewart) during stay/down/return.

1)Mr & Mrs Northern Sol are going
2)My vote would be to leave on the Tuesday. I don't see much going on until Wednesday at the meet.
3) Looks to me like this about a 13 hour drive. Therefore half way point is roughly at Morgantown WV...which is roughly a 6.5 hour drive. Did a quick check of the hotels and there is a Hampton Inn off of the I79 there. I assume that is the route we will take? Cross at Buffalo ...then over to Erie PA then south on the I79?
4) I am thinking Sue and I will to spend two nights at the meet and then carry on back working our way along the coast and checking out some sights. Plan to make this a 7 night trip when it is all said and done.

I am only at the planning stage so am highly flexible on above.. A huge YES to convoy / caravan...... Cant wait for this trip!!!!

Neil:
That's my thinking as well. Leave Tuesday, stay somewhere on the way down (N'Sol suggested a location), get to Asheville on the Wednesday, stay Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat nights in Asheville and then depart on the Sunday and stay somewhere on the way home and then arrive back in Toronto on the Monday.

Is that inline with what you were thinkin'?

If there was a side trip to the Dragon or one of the other 'dragon-type routes', and if I decided to go, then plans may have to be adjusted. This may be satisfied with NASSM sponsored runs.

I'll be booking hotel (as you have) this weekend.

Cheers and have a great Christmas and a great 2012!!!

Hey Jack.....

Definitely on the same page ..... I read through the proposed run list for NASSM and they sound like they will be able to ahmmm...."satisfy".

Merry Christmas ... talk again soon !

The runs actually start on Wednesday, so we were planning on leaving Sunday for arrival Monday, maybe doing the Dragon on the way down. Tuesday we are thinking of doing a tour of one of the Nascar race shops, or the Dragon if we don't do it on the way there. That way we are ready to go on runs Wednesday morning. With that week booked as our only vacation, I don't want to sit at home for 3-4 days waiting to go.

If anyone else is interested in leaving Sunday let me know and maybe we can start a new thread so there is no confusuon.

Definitely coming back on the Sunday, so that should be a big group coming home.

ToTD is so heavily enforced by LEO's at that time of year
that you will be forced to do it at 35 mph (about 55kph)

on the other hand Hellbender (SR28) is unregulated and speed posted is 55mph.....IT'S JUST AS TRICKY
you just take 28 at the Deals Gap store instead on continuing on 129 south
note...28 joins up with 19 for a few miles...then splits off south on it's own
look for a sign on the right (maybe a red barn there...I forget)...and follow it all the way to Franklin....the southern haslf is scenic and not as twisty as ther top half

below is link

we did Hellbender several times in'08 and had a ball

HELLBENDER

I think we might be doing the iron-butt thing (straight shot) both ways, but we hope to be able to work in a visit with family near DC a few days before the meet. Will book the hotel soon -- can always reduce the reservation if we end up visiting family first.

We won't be in the convoy on the way down, but might on the way home.

HI EVERYONE,

Hop you all have great holyday.HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR ALL

I will probably attend the event and try to tag along with your groupe to convoy down to Ashville.

I will send an invitation to all my Quebec groupe members and we will maybe be more than Alex (Ti-Pit) and I from Quebec.

Our plan will be to drive to Toronto the day before your leaving and joined your groupe for a convoy.

As per the trip back. it will be a one day drive back for me on the Sunday.

See you all in the spring.
