Then the point should be that the price of the Solstice GXP Roadster is too high to use as a base for a different top'd version.

I see what is going on. Pretty sneaky on Nissan's part. It looks like the yellow is an extra $500. I was building mine in blue and you did yours in yellow. Same options, different price. Also, you built yours with the 7 spd auto and I built mine with the 6 spd manual. It says both are included, but doesnt show the automatic is a $1300 option.
edit: and that is where the extra $1800 was coming from I was disputing earlier.
Hello, maybe the price seems high to a new 370z, but these guys on the SCCA forums seem to know something. I know there talking about the 350z, thats why Nissan had to go bigger. It cant compete on the track with a Solstice GXP T2. Thanks norm
SCCA racing forums:
. From what Ive observed from the cockpit of my car, the GXP has better acceleration but falls off up top in comparison to the Z. The GXP comes out of a corner in a league of its own though, or should I say in the league of say a vette.
Marty
There is no way on this planet the 350Z in T2 trim out performs the Solstice on the straights, period!

Thanks for the work and thought you have put in.

Not a problem. Glad I could add to the discussion.
I want one bad... but at the same time, I also don't want to get rid of my special order 2006 Solstice that I got in 2005. I simply can't justify having TWO Solstices... a convertible and a hard top one...

I hope it's just the angle of this pic, but it looks like for $1180 that soft top might be able to hold a bucket load of water when its parked and raining.
Obviously, it's the worse possible source for information, but CNBC had a show on today from the Detroit auto show (may have been an earlier repeat from NBC), but they quoted the coupe to start under $25K. Not quite, but close...
370z's are selling below invoice! 31,500 for Sport Package. not bad at all. I hope the Sol Coupe will do the same to keep it kinda close.
One thing i do like about the Z, it has all the airbags standard, 6 total. 2 in the front, 2 in the seat sides and 2 in roof! Sol has only 2 (to keep the price down - which they didnt), Sol coupe is a cool car, but it is SMALL, and we need side curtains on these when an F250 comes a knockin. At the least they should put in the side impact seat air bags! if youve ever needed them, its hard to buy a ride without them.
Man, when are they going to start production. Two unfulfilled promises: lower price and january production date. Wait any longer and the impulse for a lot of buyers will die out, plus now with the hyundai genesis coupe coming and the 370z already out, the field is getting more diluted.

I hear you. Current guesses are startup in mid-March with deliveries starting sometime in April. That is assuming that production of Solstices and Sky resumes in mid-February.
January production and sales numbers will be released later today which will give a bit better picture of where the future of the Kappa cars will be going.
Last month at this time, the sales level and inventory was pointing to about a year's worth of Kappas sitting on lots.
I'm new to this forum, and thought I would throw my "two cents" in. I'm not a true Solstice enthusist, nor do I profess to command an excessive amount of knowledge about which car is better (a turbocharged 4 cylinder Solstice or a V6 370z). In fact, I've never owned a two seater sports car before. But my midlife crisis is fast approaching and I'm really wanting one. I'm just an ordinary consumer, who isn't rich and can't afford to make a mistake when purchasing my midlife crisis toy.
Now, I've been "shopping" for a nice two seater roadster for the last five or six months, but decided on a coupe when I saw the 370z's. Wow. Then, I saw that the Solstice was coming out with a "hardtop" and I literally turned the car around on the way to the Nissan dealer. What a beauty!!! Since I was a kid, I've wanted a Targa topped car. And I don't think the Zs are going that way anytime soon. The Solstice is by far a much more attractive and show-stopping car (have to agree that the cat-fish face of the Z is not that attractive). However, being the "anal retentive" guy that I am, I decided that I needed to do my homework on which one would fit my wants/needs/lifestyle more. If I was going to convince my wife that I "needed" one, I'd need to be armed with plenty of ammo. So, for the last month or so, I've been researching and reading all I can about both vehicles, and that's how I came across this forum.
I can understand everyone's frustration, but I can't understand why SD seems to be defending the price. If I was told it would be less, and it turns out to be more, I'd be livid! So here's my 2 cents:
When I shop for a vehicle, and I HOPE most of America does this too, I tend to rely on previous model year data about the vehicle's history, reliability, and safety. I don't just rely on the "sexiness" of the vehicle, or how much horsepower it has, what bells and whistles it has, etc. After all, if I'm spending $30K+, I better be sure it's going to provide plenty of years of enjoyment and with as minimal a maintenance cost as possible. For all that information, I tend to rely on a nationally published "consumer magazine" to give me the facts on the car's reliability and review, not to mention reading all the reviews at Edmunds, Car&Driver, MotorTrend, etc, and finding out what real owners have to say. My research has proven to be a mixed bag for the Solstice. The consumer magazine doesn't like it, all the "car sites" have good and bad points, but the owners of them seem to love them. But when you look at the Zs, it appears there is very little in the way of complaints. Of course, let's face it...the Nissan Z is a REALLY good product. Now look at the history of the Z vs. the Solstice....Zs have been around for 30+ years and have a really proven track record. Solstice...not so much. Throw in the "consumer magazine"'s review of the solstice, and you've got a whole lot more people scratching their heads about the price hike.
Now, I'm not suggesting that consumers should go out and buy a Z and not consider the Solstice. But the increase in price, the extra option for the soft top, all that stuff adds up and creates a really bad taste in consumers' mouths, not to mention a HUGE speedbump for the dealers. It's hard enough to sell these kinds of cars to consumers, especially with the present economy, and raising the price on the Solstice Coupe just adds to the difficulty.
I'm still up in the air about it all. I might just have to hold off for a few more months to see how this all plays out.
