OK, this is a tad disconcerting. I just called my local dealer, and he said that Pontiac (read GM) may not green light the coupe, as of a GM webblog 4/2/08). Now, according to everything we've read, it's a go. However...I also know that until a project is officially green lighted, and begins production, things can and do change.
I'm a patient person, and not all that interested in being the first on the block to own something, in fact I'm still considering a convertible Camaro, because even in a coupe format the coupe may not offer enough rear storage for our lifestyle.
Still, I would like to begin planning. Generally speaking when something is changed (automotive wise) vendors must have enough time for producing said components. So I guess what I'm basically asking is, can I take it to the bank (now there's a term we can't even have 100% faith in anymore) that a coupe will be produced?

I just went to the GM Weblog ... last post was 4/1 so I call BS
Last I heard from ALL my sources (btw ... they know better than the dealer ) is that production WILL begin Jan 2009 ... limited production of 10k.
I would wager a majority of the dealership don't even KNOW about the coupe!

Need to get some clarification from your dealership.
Where did they read about what coupe?
There has been some internet buzz about the possibility that GM will green light a version of the G8 as a coupe for some where down the road. This was a car that previously was said not to be coming.

GM announced it as a production vehicle at NYIAS, I doubt they would pull the plug on that decision this soon.
Obviously, anything can be canceled until the date it is actually for sale... so anything is possible. However, don't let your dealer worry you about it.
Give it some time. Especially with dealer inquiries. Maybe see if your dealer will start an order list if you want to get an order in at the first opportunity, but don't expect too many details yet.
PS... when they launched the Sol initially, one thing we learned is that lots of misinformation comes out of dealers. They don't always have the facts straight!

Some times they don't even have the FACTS at all.
My dealer did not even know that:
- Deep (25u) was being discontinued
- There were SCCA special editions being made
- There was a Coupe being shown at the NYIAS
- That the SLY color had actually *changed*
Nearly everything they know about the Solstice they have learned from me .... including the RIGHT way to stow the top!
IOW ..... dealers have other concerns than our cars

A lot of dealers can't/won't even talk about new vehicles until they can 'see' it in the system!
Dealer probably wants to sell as many current Sols as he has on his lot. Telling everyone the coupe is coming is like telling them NOT to buy one of his currents converts. Why would he do that? When the coupe comes and is on his lot, then his story will change.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. Dealer wants to sell you something NOW, not some pie-in-the-sky coupe a year from now.
In my experience, the vast majority of dealers and automobile sales people couldn't care less about future vehicles. They're not monitoring websites like this one. Their whole focus is on selling what they can sell TODAY. Yes, there are some enthusiast dealers and sales people who truly love cars and do keep up with the latest news and rumors, but such folks are few and far between.

First 100,000. Waiting for the coupe...
I would first put said dealer on the spot by asking which GM Weblog he got his info from, GMInside? How about edmunds, which states (on the aforementioned 4/2) that the G8 coupe may NOT be dead? That's the closest link in a blog covering the intro of the Solstice at NYIAS I've found.

No, I do not work for GM or any subsidiary or supplier.
Yeah, when I ordered my '08 in Aug '07 my dealer did not know about the Brazen color. I might of ordered it instead of Aggresive. I think a lot of dealers need to do their homework a bit more.

Dealers from experience have been the #1 bad source of info, however I'd just like to say that Small Dealer is our #1 source for the right information!!!
