Now I really like the new Coupe and if it isn't a Targa, I'll get over it, so my question is, has anyone else heard this and what are your opinions of the article.

Hear is the quote the caught my attention "Pontiac is getting the Solstice coupe (not a targa) and the G8 Sport Truck. They should be cool-looking and fun to drive. But this is niche within niche. Neither is bound to pass 1000 sales per month."

An unflattering review of GM's new cars Article

Targa top or not - this is my next car!!!

Never believe everything you read. It is a Targa, we (on the MECCA tour in May) saw a few up close and in person.

The Solstice Coupe is a targa. GM did this on purpose because it prevents them from having to install all the necessary safety equipment like air currents in the roof. That would have required them to redesign a few things. In this case all they did was flush out the trunk, replace the rear deck with rear hatch, and add a targa in the middle. The initial release will only have the hard targa which can not be placed anywhere in the car so plan on a nice day if you take it off or plan on leaving it on. The soft replacement will be available as an option down the road from my understanding. In either case it should be a great car. Personally if I had the choice between the targa and the convertible, if they get that soft solution out I would go targa.

It is not a Targa because of trademarks.
"As Porsche helped to popularise this body style, they took out a trademark for the Targa name and manufacturers sought to look for alternative names for their removable roof"

Excuse us.

It is a removable roof panel, one piece that opens up the roof over the driver and passenger. There is a soft panel option that will be stowable in the rear area.

Funny digression: In the 1950's, Porsche had a variant of the 356 called the Continental. The small German company was sued by Ford Motors over the use of their (copyrighted) name. Ford won.

Anyhow, I understood the foldable soft top for the Coupe would be made available as an option at the Coupe's release. As for the name Targa, I never expected GM to use this moniker on the car, but rather as a generic term like "moonroof" etc. to describe the type of top it has. I'm still curious as to whether the Coupe will have additional badging to delineate it from the convertible.

PS. The Truth About Cars journalism is questionable...they seem to interject too much subjectivity and not enough fact.

Oh The Truth About Cars... How wrong they are most of the time... Which is why I never use their information

Yeah officially it's not a "Targa" It's official name is "Coupe", or "coupe model". And yeah GM calls it a "removable hard top".
