Text from the pre-announcement:

Quote:
One of the best things about living in Detroit is that you get to see just about every type of vehicle imaginable, many before they are even available on the street. The bad thing about Detroit is that the weather isn’t exactly the best for enjoying everything that some of these cars have to offer.

Take convertibles, for example. If you are one of the lucky bums who live in California, Florida, south Texas or any place where fruit actually can grow on trees in your backyard, us Mid-westerners envy you. Not only have you never heard of the term “oil-pan heater,” you can enjoy open-air driving in a convertible pretty much year-round.

For obvious reasons, there are some of us folks who long for a hard-top for their all-season capability.

So maybe it was cabin fever that made us do it. Or maybe the Easter bunny just likes hardtop coupes because the little "Easter egg" that popped up on the Pontiac.com site over the weekend sure had an affect, so we wanted to share it with those unfortunate few who may have missed the buzz.

Debuting at the New York Auto Show, Pontiac is proud to introduce the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe.

Ever since Bob Lutz rolled out a coupe concept way back in 2002, we’ve been hearing from people who wanted us to build this car and, frankly, we think the designers and engineers have really out-done themselves.

Just like the convertible, the whole style of the Solstice Coupe harkens back to the classic European roadsters of the ‘50s and ‘60s. It’s a fastback design, curvaceous and sexy, right down to the ducktail spoiler. There’s hardly a right-angle anywhere on this car.

Plus, we’ve given you the extra bonus of a targa-type removable roof panel so you can have your cake and eat it too… coupe-like comfort in less-than-perfect weather and open-air exhilaration when Mother Nature cooperates.

One thing we didn’t change was the performance and handling of the Solstice. The coupe will offer both the 173-hp 2.4L Ecotec or 260-hp 2.0L turbocharged engine, and the suspension is identical.

And you won’t have too long to wait to get your chance to test it out. The Solstice Coupe should be available in Pontiac dealerships in early 2009.

We understand the first one goes to a certain P. Cottontail, who apparently has four lucky rabbits feet.

With the roadsters sitting on the lot right next to them, I think it'll be hard to justify a higher price point for basically the same car minus the joy of top-down driving.

Besides, previous owners remember which dealers to avoid when they tried to jack up the '06 models.

Okay, very cool. From the dual-exhaust, front grill and spoiler, this would appear to be the GXP coupe. I wonder if the NA version will turn up in the next few days.
