Getting a briefcase out of the right footwell, it slipped and fell against the open cupholder with a Diet Dr. Pepper in it. It busted, of course.
Attempts to get a replacement from GMpartdirect were disappointing due to the apparent lack of availability of Sand-color replacements.
Thought I would take out the cassette and see if it was repairable. I discovered two things: The sand colored facia is removable from the cassette, so I could order a gray or ebony cassette, change out the fascia and be all set.
The "busted" cassette went back together fairly easily. I studied the pieces and found out that the front half of the ring had just been knocked loose from the cassette and could be pressed back into place. I did notice the black plastic coating on the front half ring was breaking up and peeling off somewhat. I leave the holder open most of the time and the top is down most of the time, so maybe the summer heat has gotten to it.
Anyway, I put it back together and pushed it back into the console. It works fine.

Since this was informative only, no question looking for an answer, I'm going to hi-jack it a little.
I think this has come up before, but is there something folks are using to lube the pass cup holder? Mine has gotten extremely stiff. I have to be very careful opening and closing it, which I do daily. TIA ....
Rev,
Take it out and clean it, you probably spilled something in it. Back on subject, I repaired mine 3 times before I broke it. Dealer replaced it.

Slide the cassette out and look at the plastic coating on the front half of the ring...the part that slides in and out of the back half. See it the plastic coating is delaminating from the metal beneath. That was causing mine to get stiff. I trimmed the delaminated stuff and it smoothed out.
