Clunking Sound from Rear End

I recently purchased a 2006 and I am hearing clunking sound from the rear end during shifting. It had the pinion seal recall work done. Any information on similar sounds and rear end problems would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi there!

Yup, they do that. Others can chime in with specifics, and there are about a thousand threads on this topic.

GM addressed this in the 2008 model year with a change to the differential to add a brace. Some have swapped to this newer differential and fixed the problem.

Others claim a new differential mounting bushing made of a sitffer material (urethane) fixes a lot of it. DDMWorks sells one: DDMWorks Solstice Products

DDM sells lots of goodies for our cars

I've done neither to mine, and just enjoyed the car clunks and all. Then again, I ride a Sportster, too, so clunking drivelines are par for the course around my house... Someday I may work on addressing it but for now there are other projects waiting.

I just purchased a 2006 Sol as well. I am hearing some "clunking" noise as well. I want to know if there is a way to check for sure if my Sol has the recall work done on it and if there are any HOW TOs or instructions on replacing the differential mounting bushing. Is it something that I, a man with no repair skills, can do or is this a professionals job?

Hi,
I too just bought an 06 NA 5 speed, and I have also started noticing this. I just posted about it before I found this thread.
I'm glad to hear it's a known problem and nothing to worry about, but it's still annoying. Since the 06's are no longer under warranty, is there fix that isn't too expensive?
