Convertible Top Wear

Subject: Convertible Top Wear (Replace Convertible Top and Folding Top Side Rear Weatherstrips)

Models:
2007 Pontiac Solstice
2007 Saturn SKY
2007 Opel GT
Built Prior to March 2007

Attention: This bulletin only pertains to vehicles built with plan B tops.

Condition

Some customers may comment that the convertible top is showing wear on the underside of the roof.

Cause

This condition may be due to the metal reinforcement in the folding top side rear weatherstrip protruding out and making contact with the top during the opening and closing cycles.

Correction

Replace the convertible top cover and the folding top side rear weatherstrip (left and right). These instructions supplement the top cover replacement process.

Note: Perform Step 2 before the old top cover is removed and Steps 3 and 4 with the old top cover completely removed.

1. Place a fender cover or seat cover over the seats to protect them from dirt and debris.

2. Before removing the folding top side front weatherstrip retainer. Mark the location with a paint pen for alignment.

3. With a paint pen, mark the rear of the 1-2 bow. This is the triangle area highlighted in white.
Important: The 1-2 bow of the convertible top is made out of magnesium and a die grinder should not be used to remove the material.

4. With a utility knife, scar the number 1-2 bow (shown as the highlighted area triangular zone in the graphic above). Make several passes in the material. Use vise-grip pliers to remove the piece.

5. Use a flat file and smooth any sharp edges from the bow.

6. After installing the top, cycle the convertible top assembly to verify that there is no contact between the wear clip and the 1-2 bow. If contact is made, proceed to Step 7. If not, proceed to Step 8.

7. If the wear clip comes in contact with the 1-2 bow, remove it and then measure and cut 5 mm (¼ in) off the end and reinstall.

8. Apply GM weatherstrip lubricant or dielectric silicone grease to the area shown in the illustrations above.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Thanks for the info SD. These instructions all show the infamous little tab. It's great that they're finally addressing these problems, but what if we still don't have the tab?

If you don't have a tab, make one. If its alreadt tearing the top patch it. Then add the dielectric grease but not where small dealer quotes the official GM fix. The wear area is inward about an inch & about 6-7 in. long ( not the plastic boneing strip)

Dielectric grease is available at hardware stores, auto parts & electronic supply stores such as Radio shack.

I agree with BLK GXP. Thanks again SD for some great information.

I have the same question, though - my top is going in for this repair, and I do not currently have the Wear Clips on my top frame. Is there any mention of what to do if they encounter a Plan B top without Wear Clips? OR are the Wear Clips part of the Folding Top Rear Side Weatherstrips, which are also being replaced as part of this procedure?

Thanks again for the great info!

The tab should come with the weatherstrip trim but often it doesn't. Good luck.

Sorry guys, I'm new here. Whats a "Plan B" top?

Are there any wider shots of the area? I'm having a hard time figuring out just where to check on my car.
Thanks.

Plan A versus Plan B is just how GM designates two difference versions of the convertible top design.

2006 Solstices should have Plan A tops, and I'm not aware of anyone who owns a 2006 with a Plan A top having these wear issues. I think they are a result of changes to the top frame and weather stripping that are only in the Plan B tops.

There is a notice that the dealers have which tells them when in production the design changed from Plan A to Plan B based on vehicle VIN, and also gives them instructions on how to inspect and make sure what version they are dealing with. But like I said, if you've got a 2006 Solstice, you should have a Plan A top and this bulletin shouldn't apply to you.

Hope that helps to reassure you!

I don't think my '06 ever had a tab. I only noticed the tab added in late 07. Of course my '06 is long gone and I can't look at it to check it.

I do know that the inspection the dealer did to determine whether the top was Plan A or Plan B had to do with looking at the front of the forward weatherstripping, where it attaches to the front of the top frame. This doesn't mean that the forward weatherstripping is the only part that is different. Only that that is probably the easiest place to access for a quick visual inspection and to note a design difference.

I'm going in next Monday for my second top replacement because of this. Should I be the one to tell them of the service bulletins and replacement part numbers or wait for top replacement #3?

It does suck being without the car for the week it takes them to fix it. Last time they replaced everything, not just the fabric. This time I'm insisting that they replace the Ragg Topp, as well.
