Extended GM Warranty? Seems a bit expensive......

My 16 month old GXP has 15K miles. I'm pretty certain I'll keep her for a long long time, so I talked to my dealer about adding the GM Protection Plan "Major Guard"

The package I discussed would add 6 years (from "today') and an additional 72K (beyond my 15k) of warranty protection, for everything except "normal" maintenance and some wear and tear items like the canvas part of the top and upholstery, etc.

Cost is about $2K for the $0 deductible, about $1600 for the $200 deductible.

So the question is how likely is it that I would need a $2K+ repair(s) cost that would be covered by this warranty, and would take place between 36K miles and 85K miles? And this would have to be a repair that would NOT already be covered by the 100K drivetrain warranty....

It seems to me that although that certainly could happen, I'd probably be better off keeping the $2K with my broker or at least in a FDIC insured account.....

In this case I think I'm better off being self-insured.

Thoughts?

I think you are correct. That could cover a pretty major repair. What car does not make it 85k now days anyway.

I believe they have raised the coverage price a bit since 06 because of the issues that have come to light over the past couple years and they are now assuming it will continue to be an issue more so than originally expected. if your planning to keep it esentually bone stock and for a long time then it may be worth it.

Invetsing the money elsewhere leaves open tho option of spending elsewhere which could be a good or a bad thing.

Shop around for the best price - all dealers do not charge the same.

I paid 1395.00 for the 72mo / 72K mile $0 deductible GMPP -- I think "retail" was someplace around $2K

Good luck

If you have the newer 100k drivetrain warranty the chances of a $2k failure not covered by drivetrain warranty is small. Things that could fail but not be covered by drivetrain coverage (but covered by basic bumper to bumper)

ECM (yes it is not part of the d.t.)
wiring harness
wiper motor
HVAC including compressor, condensor (major bucks)
brakes (most is wear items anyway)
cupholders

Add to the list, pick a comfort level. I have made out okay with extendeds on 4wd trucks but have yet (knock on fake plastic wood dash inlay) other than one ECM failure found taht I would have benefited from an extended on a GM vehicle. But that's just been my experience. Yours will vary.
