how do our 'chips' work? RFID? they are pretty weak so i'd keep that within range and wire a longer-range RFID receiver to the button with the transmitter in the fob. I'm sure there are kits on the market that take care of the need for a security key.

Thought I'd mention that our chips are in no way RFID. The chip in our keys is magnetic, and our lock/unlock FOB is a standard wireless transmission system.

RFID is only used to identify an object, not to send signals.

Do you know that a VW fob will work with the GM BCM and I don't know if I would really want a VW fob on my key ring?

Ive been thinking and I think the best way to do this keyless entry/start thing is just to use the corvette setup. This could be impossible if its somehow tied into the ECU or other corvette specific system but im willing to bet you could then retrofit the corvette key into the G8 fob for it to look pontiac.

Ive searched in the past to no avail in finding out any kind of specifics for the corvette system. They have a lot of goodies built in to their system. The windows even crack themselves when opening the door and reseal when you close in the convertible version.

I'm suspecting it will not out of the box, i would be more surprised of that than winning the lottery. The only constraint i see is our pcb is pretty wide so I might have to massage it a little; relocating buttons, resoldering some functions and the antenna... we'll see.

The fob is only VW by bading - obviously that wont stick around long but if the thought of having something made for VW on the ring is disheartening just think of all your fobs as cheap plastic pieces made in china.

I just talked to a friend that works for a supplier that supplies a remote keyless entry system for a couple Chrysler cars. Here's the thing, the RKE (remote keyless entry) systems are practically universal. I mean that the general concept is exactly the same, just minor differences in electronics and such. Essentially it would be trivial for GM to change over to these keys.

The problem is that most people in this country don't like the switchblade keys. GM is NOT going to make a change, albeit small, like this unless its profitable to them. They wouldn't even have to change the hardware in the car, just the key
they'd simply have to tell the supplier to make keys that are cut the same as our keys and work with the RKE modules in the cars.

Put it to you this way, GM is not going to make a change unless they absolutely have to. The best you can do is talk to anyone in GM that you know that may be high up enough to get a word in edgewise. If enough people complain about it, GM may offer an option for it, perhaps even an option that you can get on a Sol that you've already purchased. But given that the Sol is made here, and the fact that most Americans like the current style of key, GM will probably NOT put switchblade keys in the Sol anytime soon. However, it may be possible to get them to offer and aftermarket option through them to have a key made and coded to your car. If they do that, I can imagine that the price would be way up there.

Hmmm. I seriously doubt that "most people in this country" have even been asked about whether they like switchblade keys or not.

The first time I saw one, I wanted one. Takes up less space. Keeps your key out the way. Fewer holes in your pocket. What's not to like? You mean some people actually prefer having the annoying 2 part fob and metal key??? I don't believe it.

True. All I'm saying is that unless you can get an obscene amount of people to call up GM and complain or ask for the option, GM probably won't do it. Now, if someone were to contact that supplier or a vendor that makes this kind of key you might be able to do something there. Frankly when I get my Solstice in a year or so I'd rather have a switchblade key. It's nicer.

"People don't like it", is a cop out. GM is doing what they can at this time to cut cost, most of the European and high end Japanese brands have the keys and I would suspect one day all GM cars will as well.

That isn't however the point of this thread. We are trying to figure out how to retrofit the fob to the Solstice.

No, it's not just a pull and swap system. You have to have RFID sensors, rewire the ignition, figure out how to get rid of the magnetic key requirements for the ECU (the ECU will NOT allow the car to start unless it reads the proper magnetic encoding on the key, no key, no magnetic encoding)

The windows crack on all the versions because the window goes all the way into the top, our doesn't so we don't need that.

I am working on a system to triple click on unlock on your remote and it will roll down/up the windows for you.

is it a controller on the door switch itself?? That would rock as it would still work with my fob
