fuel gauge indicator....

I recently had an accident that left the front side of the car in need of a new bumper, hood, headlights, but nothing mechanical. When i received the car back from the body shop i notice that the fuel gauge was indicating FULL and telling me i had 245 miles to go. Later on the day my car stalled and of course it was due to not having gas. When i finally filled the gas up the gauge suddently shows EMPTY and I get the yellow gas light, however the miles read 241 to go before empty and the engine light is now on. I have checked all the electrical console features and everything is good except my fuel gauge. Anyone have any suggestions of what it can be??? The body shop is saying that the accident caused something in the fuel tank and that they have get a supplemental from my insurance in order to work on it. Is it something that needs resetting? I can't imagine a small accident causing that kind of damage to a gas reader sensor.

Sorry about the accident. What a bummer.

It sounds like something got switched around backwards. Good luck figuring it out and let us know what it is.

Is it out of warranty?
If not take it to the dealer and tell show them the problem.
Also check all the fuses in the fuse box in the engine compartment and make sure they are ALL seated tight.

I used to get a jumpy fuel gauge when the car was new. I read up on it and t seems our type of sensor in the tank is quite prone to getting dirty. Run a few tanks worth of good fuel through it and it should clear up. Use the 91 or above because they put more cleaners in it.
