For a week or so I've been having trouble filling the gas tank. The pump shuts off after about a gallon, then in much smaller increments. If I remove the nozzle from the car and wait a second, it'll fill about another gallon before starting over.
Where should I start looking? I understand that the pump stops because it's seeing liquid, and I can hear gas gurgling up in the line before the pump clicks off. However, I'm not sure what would cause that. I assume the fuel system is vented somewhere to let fumes out, but where?
I removed the trunk liner and blew out the lines going to the filler neck and the solenoid in the engine bay with my air compressor. I can blow through the hoses (blech) and can feel the air coming from out of the tank (next to the place where put the gas pump nozzle, whatever that's called), and at the solenoid (with the hose disconnected on that end).
Not yet. I think the canister needs to be replaced, but I haven't had time to drop the fuel tank to get it off. I did find that disconnecting one of the evap hoses will let me fill the tank up.
I blew the lines out with my air compressor. The last component is the charcoal canister. If I disconnect the line going to that, I can fill up the car. Can't take off the canister without lowering the gas tank unless I enlarge the access panel in the trunk. Which I am seriously considering doing.
Last week I started having the same problem at the gas stations. Searched the forum. On one thread it went on about difficulties in sourcing a replacement canister. Hoping that's not an issue. In a different, older thread it had steps on replacing the charcoal in the canister with stuff from a pet store. I logged in thinking it was the solenoid as that's a relative easy fix but I'm guessing my luck is no better than yours. I assume from your posts it wasn't possible to blow air through the canister. I did see a couple of videos on line, one to fix a stuck canister inlet valve, and one the repack one.
@rob the elder has a post/thread about finding another canister (HHR maybe?) that's readily available and just needs a little modifying to fit perfectly on our cars. Hopefully he can reply with the link.
I’ve had this problem for a very long time. This is a spare vehicle but I have been reading all of the “advice” throughout this forum. Don’t drop the gas tank. Don’t drop or lower the rear end. Extend the access hatch above the tank. This means cut and improvise. Replace the charcoal canister, $115 on Amazon. Vacuum (shop vac) the vent line. Mine was clogged with charcoal bits.
Problem solved! This took several hours but was very easy.
Thank you for the post. I've got the same issue with our 06. It's a real hassle fueling. Takes so much time and futzing around with the fuel handle in different positions.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
