Thats an excellent question and one asked many times - it seems no one really knows but the general thinking is it can be safely removed

It was probably shipping tape... My car had sticky residue all over it from shipping tape... on the chrome the doors the hood... All came off with first wash. (They use it so the pannels are protected). I assume this was put there for possible rock fling from the front tires as there are no splash guards while the plant/dealers drive them around the lot.

The never ending saga

So the sol is back in the body shop to see if they can get the paint to match and replace both wheel well liners they damaged trying to do the body work. I dropped it off tuesday.

So this afternoon I call over to find out what gives - four days they must be done RIGHT - NOPE

Turns out they can not get a paint match and they had to send for new wheel well liners - yep the ones they received from GM came in damage with gouges and scuffs. Mind you, when I set the appointment to bring it in because they had the parts I asked them to inspect them before calling me since, they said they had - The manager claims his parts guy mislead him. They got a second set in and they too were damaged.

So after four days they have accomplished NOTHING, and the fenders are off the car. They are beginning to talk about repainting the entire car or at least the hood to aid in the paint match, something I will not accept - thats crazy and I will take it to a body shop I have used before first. They are also saying they might take the wheel well liners from an 06 aggressive sitting on their showroom floor, but I dont believe they will.

So more then two months later - still not fixed and this is all due to that freggin pinon seal leak and a careless service department lift.

You're absolutely right about this one. My car is has had cracking wheel liners just like Mako. I have had them replaced twice, and I think I am going to need a third set soon. I noticed that using larger washers helps alleviate the stressed areas. Loosening the screws also helps.

Just tell them you would like the right and left doors blended for color match
as well as the hood blended for colormatch. Possibly rocker panels and quarter panels, ( because there is not a breakline to stop the clearcoat on both rocker panels ) . To panel paint any color other than black is a crap shoot for color match. Also make sure they remove all the trim from the front doors before clearcoating. ( outer door handles,mirrors, belt moldings, interior door trim to access outer door handles don't forget both taillamps, antenna rear bumper cover if they do the rocker panels ). Opened up a can of worms, but if you want it done right these are the steps to take.
