   New fluid leak in rear
Member

Join Date: Apr 2006
Hi,
Checked some of many threads and postings about rear diff problems including the leak. I just discovered a new leak from the rear of my wife's '07 Solstice (base model) over the noon hour.
The oily substance is dripping off the left side of the rear stabilizer bar and muffler. It appears the oil is dripping down on to the bar and muffler from an approx. 3/8-1/2" diameter black hose that is pretty stiff. This hose is routed well above the muffler and I near the gas tank. The fluid is definitely not gas, but a darker oily fluid. I cannot see the source of the leak, but it appears the tube is not punctured. What is strange is that I do not see any evidence so far of oil dripping from the bottom of the rear diff (have the LSD).
The pinion seal and vent tube were replaced about 3,000 miles ago last Spring.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Probably the pinion seal again. Take it to the dealer and have them look at it. Good luck.

Sounds to me like they installed the extended relief valve (rubber house w/valve at the end). I would take it in and have it checked.

Thanks for the responses. If it was a little bit of a leak, I would think the vent tube was doing its job. But there is enough oil on the bottom of the muffler and stabilizer bar (multiple spots pooling then dripping) to indicate that the volume of fluid escaping/leaking is not normal. Definitely heading to the dealer.
Sincerely,

I had so many differential issues that I requested GM t o extend my warranty. Guess what? They did! So if you keep having problems with your differential request a warranty extension on the rear diff only. Chances are they will honor your request. If the dealer says no go over their head and call GM directly.
Hope it helps.

Did you buy a Solstice? The differential leak is a feature, it seems most have had or will have an issue.

source of rear end leak found

Thought I would check my wife's Solstice once again tonight when I could elevate inspect the rear end of the car.
The source of fluid was the vent tube, from the end valve that is tied up behind the gas tank. Fluid had sprayed (looked like blotches) over parts of the car's underside and rear valance plus trickled down the tube to leak onto the stabilizer, chassis crossmember and muffler. As of tonight, the fluid overflow has stopped.
What caught me off guard earlier, when I noticed the fresh oil spot on the driveway, was what I perceived to be the size of the leak. The oil spot was multiple times the size of a quarter. Also, there were numerous fluid droplets forming on the stabilizer, crossmember and muffler.
I guess a lot more fluid can escape the vent tube valve than I ever imagined normal or possible.
Also surprising is that this never happened before since replacement of the pinion seal and installation of the vent tube modification last Spring. This is my wife's daily driver and in previous months had been driven harder and longer in very hot weather compared to the recent past. Today was a typical eight mile trip (2/3 at interstate speeds) to and from work a couple times in 32 degree weather. Why diff fluid never flowed out the vent tube before today is beyond me.
Thanks again for your responses.
