How many miles did you have on the filter when it collapsed? I could probably manage to run mine over 7500 miles before the display would read 0% (I have a gxp). Though I didn't wait that long...
I bought the car at around the 5200 mark and drove it only about 1500 before I changed the oil. I was told that the oil had recently been changed before I bought the car, which one would imagine would make the filter relatively new...
Could have been some goober tightening the ever-loving snot out of the cap at the quick lube, or wherever it could have been serviced, so I really can't say.
From my readings the filter snaps into the cap and spins on. If the clearance when the bottom seats is tight it causes the pleats twist. I'm going to pick up another filter and make sure it's seated properly before capping it.

Hmm. I may open the filter back up and just double check it this weekend.
I thought from what I could see, and the "point" at the bottom of the filter that it would seat pretty easily or else you wouldn't be able to tighten it down, but that is simply what i gathered from observation. I'd have to look again to feel more confident about that, but apparently something can go wrong there...
I have replaced three filters myself, and examined several others that my dealer replaced. None were collapsed.
Did the collapsed filter come out with the cap ? Or did it have to be removed separately ?
The filter was still attached to the cap, very snugly.
I had to pull harder than I imagined to pop the filter out, actually, but I don't think anything was damaged on the cap or filter from what I examined.

This seems unlikely, as the cap screws down against a shoulder, and the filter is still supposed to be loose at that point.
Since I saw the first of these crushed or collapsed filters my thought has been that the filter was dropped into the engine, then the cap screwed down onto it. The clips that hold it into the cap do not self-align in the cap, so that could easily result in the filter getting crushed. The pin at the bottom of the filter finds its hole pretty easily, so if the filter is snapped into the cap first it would seem unlikely that it would get crushed during assembly.

Pontiac dealership said some non-OEM filter manufacturers get the dimensions a little off, which is likely the only reason I can see this happening as well. Like you said, I do doubt it though.

You're right, it could have been the filter dropped in, rather than snapped into the cap. Either way, I snapped mine into the cap first, so I may check it again at some point, but I highly doubt there should be an issue with the new filter I put in.
