The problem turned out to be the shifter knob. I know its hard to believe..but it was loose and vibrated. I just pulled it off and put some felt inside..and remounted the knob..and pronto..fixed.
Is there a trick to getting this off? Is it the very top that pops off? Or do I have to get under the shifter? To me it sounds like this coming from the underside of the car and I hear it everytime over a small bump. Is this pretty much how it is for everyone? I wish I could get in another Solstice and see if there is the same sound. I've yet to see anyone with the car here in Passaic Cty, NJ.

Initially when we heard sounds while driving on a rough surface, we discovered it was coming from the passenger seat belt. Depending on the current position, this seat belt could drive one crazy. I found it to be fine if I click the passenger seat belt at all times even while driving alone.
I heard the same rattle (left ear). I found that the seat was reclined to far and rubbing. Once I adjusted the seat it disappeared. It does sound very metallic though. I also originally thought it was coming from the conv roof mechanism
That is what I did. If the noise is coming from the left of the passenger ear side, I would bet that your seat is rubbing against the headrest, tilt forward a notch.

Chris,
I'm a bit to the West of you, in Morris County. And I think solli4me might be tooling around your part of the state somewhere. Perhaps you'll run into one of us soon, and we can compare cars.

I have had a squeaking coming from behind my head when the top is down, and I think I have found the cause. The pin that locates the top in the windshield frame on the passenger and drives side looks like it is supposed to set in a little felt pad (green arrow), but instead it sits on top of a metal piece that is wearing away (red circle.) Can any one else confirm that it is supposed to sit in the felt pad?

Thanks mceb, I was looking for this thread last night when solli mentioned it. I'm going to move the pieces, but still mention it to the dealer on the first oil change. I got a small list of issues going for the service guy there.
1. Small oil leak from diff vent
2. Waterfall cup holder won't pop out
3. Velcro pads in trunk misplaced
4. Plastic tabs on the trunk lid to protect the paint from buttress pins are misplaced, now I have a chip in my trunk lid!
Trent,
Here is a wider shot of the area in question. The red arrows point to the locating pin, and the much less visible Velcro covered tab that it is resting on when stored. Please disregard the pasty white arm, I'm from New England...
I started experiencing a very irritating noise coming from over my left shoulder when the top was down and I went over very rough bumps. When I was on smooth pavement, no problem. Well I discovered the problem and the fix.
PROBLEM: When you fold the top down, the two "pins" that fit into the windshield frame have a "resting" place when folded into the trunk. There is a small piece of velcro that GM covers the metal "L" into which these pins nestle. After several closes of the top, the metal pins push the velcro away and you have metal to metal contact that gives off this squeaking noise.
SOLUTION: Get some self-adhesive velcro and peel away about 1 1/2" of the backing. With your trunk open and your top folded about 3/4 of the way down, you can peer in from the side of the trunk and see this L bracket. Peel the old velcro away, and apply your new piece on the front and fold it over onto the back of the L bracket and cut off the excess. DO BOTH SIDES... and voila, problem solved ladies and gents.
Would like to hear from anyone that has had a similar problem and tries this fix.

Yeap, ive been trying to get mine fixed for 2 months.
I cannot find the right size self adhesive velcro pieces.
I can cut them , but they are still too thick.
Also, the passenger L bracket is bent all to hell... looks like a trip to mr. dealer
