2007 gxp, Rear window became unglued and started being a problem when putting the top down, one night it shattered while closing the trunk, should i call a local pontiac dealership? I know
they are not made any more so im thinking it might be hard to replace, any help would be appreciated! Thank you
You need to get a used replacement rear glass, maybe from someone who has a top that is ripped etc. I had a small corner coming loose and I glued the corner back to the with 3m black super fast drying window weld. Attached a link below.
I would PM Hoosier GXP and see what he has. You might be able to find one at a junk yard, I have heard they can be reglued, but have never tried. Glen has a lot of experience with these cars. He should have a reasonable, or at least the most reasonable answer for you. Good people for sure.
The Top has a small less then a 2" rip on the left side just over the drivers head.
When this rip happened my insurance wanted to have it repaired using a sticky Cloth glued on the underside of the rip and closing the rip gap.
I could understand the process would of worked but I said no I wanted a new top. That's the reason why I pay insurance isn't it....
This top is still jet-black in color, looks almost like new - I bet even better then most tops out there....
Asking price: $150 New Price $100 + Shipping....
Red mark in this picture shows location of rip
This is what it would look like with Sticky Cloth on the underside with repair.
Not Shipping outside the United States 48 Mainland States, Sorry!
Folks might be right about having to replace the entire top, but I'd at the very least check w/either a convertible repair or auto glass replacement shop first to see if it's possible to glue a replacement rear window into your current top. Granted you'd have to locate a rear window, but if your top is in good condition other than the busted window it might be worth checking into. BTW, there's been many posts regarding the rear window coming unglued and having to be reglued again.
MARVIC 1 has the best deal available on the slightly damaged top above, but you have to move on it, it'll disappear pretty quickly.
Otherwise, skersfan tip to contact HoosierGXP or ChopTop's suggestions make a lot of sense. If you can find a replacement glass, 3m Window Weld is the solution to glue a new window in place.
My rear window was reglued with 3m Window Weld in mid-2006 and it is tight as can be now after 10 years.
The biggest problem you will face if you want to simply replace the glass is going to be finding the glass. The official GM repair procedure for the backlite is to replace the entire canvas assembly, so the glass by itself was never specified as a service part, and is unlikely to be in anyone's system. The first call I would make if you want to go this route would be to the biggest auto glass replacement company in the area and ask them to see if they can find the glass. Be prepared to pay for this option, I would only pursue it if your top is in really good condition other than the broken backlite.
If you want to do this yourself the previous suggestions about replacing the entire top, or salvaging the glass from a damaged top are both valid. Cleaning the broken glass out of your top, and getting the replacement glass out of the donor top (and clean enough for a good installation) will both be a lot of work and, of course, you risk damaging either the glass or your top in the process. Installation of the glass isn't easy, but it is fairly straightforward, so the biggest challenge will really be getting everything ready.
Very definitely a series of judgement calls here. Good luck.
I had a Mustang and the glass was bonded with the top at time of production. Cost to replace just backglass - $3500, cost to replace entire top - $3800. It was outrageous! Good Luck!!
I think ChopTop makes a lot of sense on picking the top up from Marvic1.
I have a complete extra one (thank you 40rty)just in case. Some of these upholstery shops can do about anything to make things look right, the tear may be fixable. Heck how often do we have the tops up anyway.
