Hi all,
We are a new group of Israeli Pontiac Solstice owners and almost all of our members had or still have a problem with the Passenger Airbag Sensor.
Some of us already replaced the sensor (P/N 19124219), but this is very pricy and we're afraid it will just keep getting broken.
Do you also have this issue?
What about if all of us complain to NHTSA? Do you think they would make GM have a recall for this part?
Well, there are some GM folks who monitor this forum, and you might find that one of them assists with your situation. It has happened before. Not always, but it has happened.
I would say, however, that there have been some reported issues with the passenger side air bag sensor. Generally, they have been fine after the part is replaced.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. You'll need one more post approved before you're able to see your messages immediately upon posting them.
I have that problem and its only 5yrs old. And the part I found at gmpartsdirect is $235. And at the moment I don't have the income to afford it..... so if there is enough of use complaing about this well they do a recall or at least look into it? How long are they supposed to last????
It's a pretty well reported issue with multiple threads. Mine's been broken for a couple years now since not only is the part a couple hundred dollars but it needs to be #$@$%@ 'calibrated' at the dealership for another couple hundred.
Add me to the list of frustrated drivers. I LOVE my car, HATE the airbag problem. This is my only transportation also and have limited resources for fixing the problem. Hey GM...do the RECALL. I understand the corporate math... the chances of being sued by one family that lost a loved one because of this safety issue is probably more economical, but it shows true strength of character to do the RIGHT thing, not the easiest and you will have loyal customers for life. You will make your money back trifold. THAT is good business.
No expert on this, but understand the concept that there is a sensor that determines how much weight is in the passenger seat to determine if the bag should be active or not.
Shortly after I bought the sol this spring I was cleaning inside and out with the top down and I began to kneel in the center of the passenger's seat and stopped myself.
Could such a maneuver and load actually damage that sensor?
The sensor went (and idiot light came on) in my 2006 Solstice after going over a very rough road (and railway tracks) with someone in the passenger seat.
So I think kneeling in the centre of the passenger seat could damage or break a connection in the seat sensor. It is a pad suspended in the foam of the seat.
Just the bottom foam pad w/ sensor can be replaced. I think I paid approx. $175CDN for the part and had the shop install it. Pull the seat, remove leather seat cover, remove old foam part, install new foam part then recover with leather seat cover. Reinstall seat in car.
That'd be nice but since the sensor actually talks on the CAN the only way would be to send whatever signal 'off' or 'on' would be along the wire.
If TomatoSoup or anyone else with a electronics background wants to do the research I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated Eventually I'll get around to trying but I just haven't gotten my car inspected in a few years.
I'd just like to add that I also have this problem, I bought my car with 27k on it. 2006 base model. The airbag issue came on about 32k. I'm sorry but 32k is entirely too early on in a car's like for such an issue to be happening, and the fact that so many people have documented this problem, GM needs to own up and fix our problems, it's obviously a design issue, and it's a safety issue. I'm surprised that what is technically a faulty safety system has not been made a recall yet, we need to light a fire under GM's ass to fix it. Compromise on safety is unacceptable, especially when it's a faulty design/stock part.
I have same problem 2007 36,000 km and the sensor failure. GM should address this issue as is a safety issue. The dealer here in mexico would charge $1,000 usd to fix this. There has been a lot of issues, so I think is a supplier failure, and they should pay.
Hi Pete244, did you fix the problem? who and where ? I have the same service airbag message in the display . I live in Mexico DF too. genaro_garduno@hotmail.com
I have a Pontiac Solstice 2006. My airbag light stays on and the passenger airbag light remains off with a passenger sitting in the seat. Same problem every Solstice has. Lets recall this guys.
I'm also having a problem with the airbag light in my 2006 Solstice. I filed a complaint with the National Safety Commission, but all I got back was an acknowledgement of my complaint. Judging from the research that I've done, this is a huge problem, which I assume they will not address unless someone is killed.
Hi guys,
Maybe it's time to bring this issue up again.
GM recalls 1.2M more vehicles for airbag issues - Business - CBC News
I read that GM has decided to recall the airbag sensor:
"1.18 million SUVs, including 70,437 in Canada, because their side air bags, front center air bags and seat belt pretensioners might not deploy if drivers ignore an air bag warning light on their dashboard. The recall includes the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia from the 2008-2013 model years; the Chevrolet Traverse from the 2009-2013 model years; and the Saturn Outlook from the 2008-2010 model years. GM says no injuries are related to the defect."
I know some people reported to NHTSA, but maybe someone should gather all VIN numbers and phone numbers and send one Excel sheet to GM and NHTSA about this problem.
I think if we send them 200 vehicles with this problem they would listen.
What do you say about getting a list of people with this problem and then creating a kickstarter.com or indiegogo.com project and asking for repair funding for this.
I'm sure it would create hell for GM.
