Per GM's publically available information on their media website:

http://media.gm.com/us/pontiac/en/pr...ice/index.html

The Solstice will have late availability of the Hydra-Matic 5L40-E five-speed automatic transmission.

Thanks to rlhammon for noticing the updates on the media site, and Aardvark for pointing out the transmission information.

The site even lists what the gear ratios will be.

Gear...... Manual...Auto
First....... 3.75..... 3.42
Second... 2.26..... 2.21
Third...... 1.37..... 1.60
Fourth.... 1.00..... 1.00
Fifth...... 0.73..... 0.75
Reverse.. 3.67..... 3.03
Final...... 3.91:1.. 3.91:1

Current applications of this automatic transmission include the Cadillac Sigma platform RWD and AWD cars, the CTS, STS, and SRX equipped with the high feature V6 engines (DOHC). V8 powered cars use the 5L-50E version of the transmission.

Also of note is that this transmission sees duty in a variety of BMW's, 3 series, 4 series, Z3/Z4, etc.

Here is the GM Powertrain website, but the specific information for the transmissions is not coming up for me. http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...issions/hydra/

Sort of on topic...

I ran across this transmission application guide which is kind of interesting. Shows makes and models for just about every auto company, and what transmissions each vehicle used. I thought I'd add the link to this post to share it with anyone else who might be interested too.

Here is another link, where you can select info about the 5L40-E.
http://media.gm.com/division/2005_prodinfo/powertrain/

Select Automatic Transmissions on the left side menu, then look for the 5L40-E.

Awesome, so the "CTS" auto tranny has been confirmed for use in the Solstice. I previously did a write-up post and gathered information from various GM and third party sites about he 5L40E, speculating that it would probably end up in the Solstice. It was about a month ago. No one paid much attention to it but it seems that I was correct We should note that some of the applications have given the driver manual shift control, and that the transmission has been used with up to 250HP engines. This could mean big things for the much-bashed automatic tranny.

Good detective work!

According to GM's specs, the transmission will handle up to a maximum torque of 254 lb-ft (see Small Dealers link for source). That will be plenty for the base Solstice, and they could come in at or under it for the GXP, if they decide to offer an auto with the GXP. Of course, they could also move to the 5L50E on that engine.

Another noteworthy spec, the weight of this transmission is 175 lbs dry, 186 wet.

Hey thanks. And you can never tell with automatic transmissions and what they can handle. The Grand Prix GTP has the 4T65E tranny with "HD" treatment so it can handle the torque of the supercharger. Smalldealer's link shows it listed as having maximum engine torque of 280 - but if my memory serves me correctly, this tranny is also used with the new 5.3L LS4 which has around 323. Sometimes GM just upgrades the transmission internals for performance versions. Maybe on the GXP we'll see cool stuff like TAPshift and a beefed-up trans. I'm sure a 6-speed manual will be standard though.
